Veronica Matthews played for the Bears women's golf program during
the Spring of 2001. She led the team to the National Championships
that season in Shawnee, OK, where the team placed 11th nationally.
Coach Matthews, in her second years as the head coach of the Bears
program, graduated from Pricess Alexandra School of Nursing in
London, England, and South Ockendon School of Nursing in Essex,
England, in 1975. She retired from the Good Samaritan Medical
Center in 1990.
She has been an active member of the Encanto Women's Golf Association
since 1995 and has served on the Board as treasurer, handicap
chairman and tournament chairman.
Coach Matthews has two holes-in-one, making the first at an
Arizona Women's Golf Association State Senior Tournament at Arizona
Golf Resort and the second at Aguila Golf Course in the presence
of her husband, Freddie Matthews, Jr.
The Matthews son, Fred (Boojie) Matthews, III, is a member of
the Phoenix College Men's Golf Team and is a Presidential Scholar.
Coach Matthews main goal as a coach is to incorporate sports
with academics to showcase players talents while she learns life
skills in Junior College.
