If a patient has uncontrollable laughing, they have reached an undesirable level of nitrous oxide sedation. At this point, the clinician needs to administer 100% oxygen to their patient and discontinue the use of nitrous oxide.
Other signs that a patient has reached an undesirable level of nitrous oxide sedation include:
heavy perspiration
feelings of spinning or vibration
over responsiveness to stimuli
exaggerated breathing
a feeling of heaviness in the chest
heavy tearing (lacrimation)
