A partial solution to the problem of delaying or even preventing vertical transmission of MS from mother to child would be:

prescribe antibiotics to the mother to be taken immediately after the birth of the child to prevent the transmission of the caries organisms to the child

have the mother rinse with an over-the-counter mouthrinse three times daily to eliminate the caries organisms from her oral cavity

have the mother use a baking soda toothpaste to reduce bacterial levels

prescribe a 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthrinse (Peridex, PerioGard) to be used daily during this perinatal period to reduce the number of MS in the saliva of an infected individual
