Part 2: Fluoride Varnish

Additionally, the use of fluoride varnishes can be readily adapted into a traditional medical setting, providing these healthcare providers with the opportunity to do their part to promote optimal oral health in their patients. The application of fluoride varnishes is extremely easy to learn and to perform - a step-by-step procedure will be provided in this course.

During the last 25 years a number of laboratory investigations and clinical investigations have shown that varnishes supply fluoride more efficiently than other topical agents. The purpose of applying topical fluoride to the exterior of teeth is to retard, arrest, and reverse the caries process. As was noted in Part 1 of this course, topical benefits of fluoride are derived from water, dentifrices, over the counter rinses, prescription rinses and gels, and professionally applied products.
