Part 1: Case Study

Place Jessie in the knee-to-knee position:

3. It will now be easy to assess the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, being certain to lift the upper lip to examine the entire labial surface. Non-dental pediatric healthcare providers may find it useful to use an otoscope to help visualize the oral cavity. First begin with brushing the teeth with a gently scrubbing motion to remove any visible plaque.

4. To examine the lingual surfaces of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth as well as the posterior teeth will require the use of the mouth mirror (disposable mouth mirrors are commercially available) and a stable head position for the child. Jessie can either stay in the position she is in, or she can be placed prone on an examining table or seated on her mother's lap with the back of her head against her mother's chest.
