The teeth need to be cleaned either with a wet, small-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush or a wet washcloth or gauze at least one time a day, with twice-daily cleanings being preferable.

Toothbrushing should be made into a habit, and be performed at the same time every day, for instance before the baby's bath or before the bedtime story.

While a baby should be encouraged to use a toothbrush on their own, the parent or caretaker must be the responsible person to clean the baby's teeth, usually until the age of five.
