Part 1: Case Study

Your next question in your risk assessment of Jessie is:

What are your expectations for Jessie's teeth?

Betsy tells you she does not want Jessie to have the dental problems she has had, and that she wants Jessie to always have a pretty smile.

Your response to Betsy could be:

We now know that keeping a baby's teeth healthy is the key to their future optimal dental health.

A dentist and a dental hygienist should see Jessie at least twice a year, or more frequently if needed to maintain optimal oral health. If it is impossible to get her to a dental office, her medical provider should be examining Jessie's teeth each time a visit is made for a well-child exam, and perhaps be providing preventive treatments in the form of fluoride varnish treatments (covered later in this course) if that option exists in the office. Referrals to dental providers in the community are essential, however, if optimal oral health is to be maintained for both Jessie and Betsy.
