Cultural & Applied Social Sciences

Mission: To provide educational offerings in cultural science disciplines
to meet general studies transfer requirements and occupational
programs in applied social science fields.

Goals:

1. To provide entry level courses in selected cultural science disciplines to meet the baccalaureate general studies requirements of four-year institutions in Arizona.

2. To develop and provide occupational programs in applied social science fields to enhance the employability of our students.

3. To promote access to and success in post-secondary education for diverse populations within our community.

4. To recruit and retain qualified faculty who reflect and embrace the diversity of the community we serve.

5. To develop and maintain relationships with the community, including schools, universities, businesses, and public and private agencies, that will enhance the success of our students in their pursuit of higher education and/or employment.

Philosophy:

The faculty in the department are committed to serving our current and future students by being always attentive to their changing demographics, the corresponding diversity of their preparation, and the changing world in which they will be citizens. To accomplish this we must be dedicated to providing the education which our students need, rather than the education that we received when we were students. Thus, we must focus on the student as a whole person, being ever-sensitive to the diversity of backgrounds and challenges which our student population faces today. Such a commitment may require that we try innovative styles of teaching and non-traditional paradigms to promote learning. It will require that we find a way to maintain the standards of our transfer disciplines while simultaneously serving the training demands of our external communities. We believe that we can accomplish both of these and we are excited at the prospects that the future offers to us.
