1.  The MCCCD 2004 United Way Campaign officially begins on Friday, October 1, 2004 and will run through the month of October.   Go to http://www.vsuw.org to review the list of dozens of agencies that benefit from the United Way.   Employees can donate to the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation and these dollars will benefit the ACE Program.

The following action item has been approved:

Title V-Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions Grant from the Department of Education in the amount of $372,000 for the fifth of five years.  This grant is designed to strengthen college systems to better serve underrepresented minorities and low-income students by providing technology to classrooms and learning assistance. 

3. Join the fun on Saturday, October 2nd for the dedication of the Phoenix Rotary 100 Field of Dreams at Arthur M. Hamilton Elementary School at 2020 W. Durango in Phoenix.  The dedication ceremony begins promptly at 11:00 a.m. with sports clinics and games before the ceremony.  There will be plenty of refreshments, including hot dogs and burgers, chips, popcorn and cotton candy for all.  Join RI President Glenn Estess, Phoenix City Mayor Phil Gordon, Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne, project partners and hundreds of others in this momentous occasion for the kids of the Murphy Elementary Schools.  Bring family, business associates and friends to the dedication of this beautiful park. These elementary school children are potential student athletes at Phoenix College. Come out to visit with future Phoenix College Bears at this new sports and playground on Saturday. The school is located at 19th Avenue and Durango near I-17.   Dr. Gardea is an active member of the Phoenix 100 Rotary.

The  Deer Valley High School 's Northwest Education Center Architecture Program was recently awarded $26 million in state-of-the-art architectural software.  No other high school in Arizona has this software and only a dozen universities across the country have it.  The program is run by adjunct faculty member Scott Thomas who has taught at PC's architectural drafting program for the past five years.  Congratulations Scott!

5.  Congratulations to 2004-2005 Scholarship recipients!  The following individuals received scholarships from the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Future Nursing and Allied Health Faculty Grant Recipient:
Piedad Blake, MS- Nursing

Salsbury Scholarship: The program is named in honor of Dr. Clarence G. Salsbury, who in 1939 was the founder and first president of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association.The Salsbury Scholarships are a range of scholarships given to students pursuing careers in healthcare professions in high demand. Scholarships are awarded annually ranging from $500-$5,000 each.

The BHHS Legacy  Foundation Scholarships: Awarded to students for the advancement of health or related careers that are specifically identified in the healthcare industry shortage category. Students who live in the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan area (Maricopa county) or the Bullhead City/Laughlin (Mohave County) receive first consideration for these scholarships that are awarded in amounts up to $700 per school year.

Nursing/Allied Health Faculty Grants: Are used to help alleviate the faculty shortage and to increase capacity in Arizona's healthcare education programs. Grants are awarded in the amount of $5,000.

6.  Debbie Dennis, Program Director of the Medical Coding: Hospital Based Certificate Program, received notification this week from the American Health Information Management Association that the program has met all of their criteria and can be officially recognized as an "Approved" coding program. The program accepted students for the first time a year ago in the fall. Congratulations to both Debbie Dennis and Tracy Domino, HIM Laboratory Instructor who assisted her with the document, for the success of the program.

7.  The Business Student Scholarship Program 2004 Fall Awards reception took place on Monday, September 28, 2004 in the Bulpitt Auditorium. This year's guest speaker was PC Alumna Maria Silva who is from Sri Lanka.
