1. The PC Wellness Committee and the Maricopa County Tobacco Use Prevention Program team up to offer a free quit tobacco class at Phoenix College beginning Sept. 7.  The class will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m.- 7 p.m. until Oct. 12, in HC 4 in the lower level of the Hannelly Center.

Participants will learn techniques to help them quit and get the support needed to remain tobacco-free.  The classes are facilitated by Arizona Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists and all participants will receive 50 percent off the retail price of nicotine replacement therapy such as the patch or gum.

For more information or to register for the class, please call (602) 372-7272.

2. Congratulations to the following PC employees:

  • Genevieve Watson was recently appointed to the Governor's Youth Development Task Force. Genevieve has been assigned to the Youth Workforce Development Policy Work Group. The Task force is comprised of members of the community representing diverse expertise in the youth development field and a cross-section of Arizonans of various ethnicities, geographic locations and ages.
  • Cecilia Quiroz-Vasquez accepted a temporary assignment as Office Coordinator I in Recruitment & Retention.
  • Monica Castañeda has joined the ranks of PC’s adjunct faculty.  Monica is teaching a Speedy Spanish course this semester.
  • Anna Chavira has accepted to serve as the coordinator of the Hispanic Service Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) Grant.  For the last year Anna was serving as the acting coordinator.
3. A search will be conducted to fill this vacancy. In the interim, adjunct faculty member Rosemary Hernandez has been hired to fill this role on a temporary basis. The committee will be finalized next week.

4. You should be aware that the 2004 bond contains funds to create a downtown Phoenix presence for the Maricopa Community College District. The exact location and scope have not been determined. Chancellor Glasper continues to keep in close communication with ASU President Crow as our two systems will form a partnership to provide undergraduate education at this downtown location. One fact to remember is that all services and classes to be taught downtown will be provided through currently existing Maricopa Community Colleges. In other words, this is not a new and stand alone college; FTSE generated by offerings downtown will be credited to the college provider. Furthermore, Phoenix College will be the primary provider as downtown is PC's service area. We will keep you informed as this project continues to unfold. This is an opportunity for Phoenix College to continue to be responsive to its ever changing community and to strenthen its strong tradition of being the higher education institution of choice in the central valley.
