1. Sgt. Tyler Prewitt, a member of the United States Army and former Phoenix College student died from injuries sustained in a battle in Iraq on September 28, 2004.  Tyler was a baseball player at Phoenix College until he enlisted shortly after the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.  We extend our condolences to his family and friends.

2.           VSUW Information/Events
*  Please plan to attend a Valley of the Sun United Way presentation on  Tuesday, October 12, 2004 in the North/South Staff Dining rooms at 1:30 p.m.  Jennifer Hunt from the VSUW will deliver a short presentation.  Monica Castañeda and Queta Chavez will also make a brief presentation on PC's ACE Program.  This year if you elect to have your donation go to the MCCCD Foundation your donation will benefit the Maricopa ACE programs.
Refreshments will be served and when you register to attend you will have an opportunity to win some cool prizes!

*Please be advised of a key change. If you select the MCCCD Foundation to receive your donation your dollars will benefit the Maricopa ACE programs. The agency # for ACE is 2803.  We can no longer specify any Maricopa scholarship funds as the recipient.  Also remember that there are dozens of agencies in Maricopa County that receive United Way funding to provide much needed services.  Please go to  http://www.vsuw.org

*  District employees received a message from Dr. Glasper yesterday informing us that October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Did you know that in 2002, there were 41 domestic violence related deaths in Maricopa County?  Last year, over 6,400 individuals received emergency refuge from domestic violence.  More than 100 women are killed each year in domestic violence incidents in Arizona alone.  One way to stop the violence is to support United Way funded organizations that provide support and shelter to victims of domestic violence.  Three such agencies are:

  1. Chrysalis Shelters - #7000
  2. The Salvation Army - #1455
  3. Sojourner Center - #3033
For additional information call 1-800-799-SAFE.
