The deadline is Friday, October 29, 2004, by 5:00 pm

Don't let time tick away. Take a moment now to submit your donation/donor form to Renee Perry @ the president's office via intercampus mail. 

Also, if you wish to donate to the ACE Program, please refer to the Restricted Gifts section and write-in: Maricopa Foundation; Code #2803.

2.  Congratulations to Cecilia Quiroz-Vasquez for being awarded the FBI/LULAC Community Service Award. Cecilia was selected based upon her dedication and continued involvement with the community and work with youth.

3.  Phoenix College Student Honored

Phoenix College student, Wendy Huston, will be honored during the City of Phoenix 2004 Ability Counts Awards Luncheon on October 27th. The City of Phoenix Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues recognized Ms. Huston for her outstanding achievements and significant contributions in empowering people with disabilities and increasing public awareness of disability issues.  Congratulations Wendy!

4.  The new hospital-based Coding Certificate Program recently received national approval by the Council on Accreditation of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The program is now listed in the Directory of Approved Programs. 

The Phoenix College Health Information Management Department has offered coding courses since the 1960s. The hospital-based program was added in Fall 2003 to provide students the option to focus specifically on hospital-based coding. 

5.  Y'all come out and join us Saturday, October 23, 2004 for "An Arizona Western Experience" from 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.in Sophomore Square.

An Arizona Western Experience features music, a petting zoo, hayrides for the kids and an authentic Cowboy BBQ! The performance lineup includes:

--Marshall Trimble - PC alumnus and official Arizona State Historian relating humorous stories of his boyhood in Ash Fork;
--Dolan Ellis - Arizona's State Balladeer;
--Mariachi Allegre - Tejano and Mariachi trio;
--Sue Harris Trio - Arizona's Cowgirl Sweetheart and her band;
--Madison Walker - one-man show performing as Black Cowboy Nat Love and as a Buffalo Soldier; and,
--Yellowbird - Native American musicians and dancers

Events are free with advance tickets for a Cowboy BBQ plate for $3. For more information, please call (602) 285-7494 or (602) 285-7231.
Food tickets will cost $5.00 on Saturday. 
 

6.  Albert Davis, a former professor at Phoenix College passed away on October 16, 2004. Mr. Davis served chair of the Music Department  from 1961-1982. A multi-talented musician, Mr. Davis was a pioneer in creating precision marching football half-time shows and is the composer of "Maroon and Gold," the Davis ASU fight song along with more than 600 band compositions. Services will be held Friday, October 22, 2004 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 5510 N. Central Aveenue in Phoenix.

Dr. Agnes Hartnell, a PC faculty member for 15 years passed away on October 9, 2004. She had served as chair of the Home Economics Department and retired in 1984. Dr. Hartnell was a registered dietitian who authored five books on nutrition related topics. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Hartnell Memorial Scholarship Fund at Phoenix College. A ceremony to celebrate Dr. Hartnell's life will be held in November.

7.  The Phoenix College Testing Center received an award for "Dedicated GED Training and Guidance" at the Arizona Department of Education’s Joint Adult Education Directors and GED Examiners Institute. Rosemary Schweigert, Testing Center coordinator, also received a certificate for her 10 years of service. Congratulations to Rosemary and her staff! 

8.  Phoenix College will roll out the red carpet for members of the 1964 National Championship football team during the October 23rd Homecoming game half-time show. 

Former NFL player and PC head football coach, Ron Wolfley and his team will take on Pima Community College at 7:00 p.m. at Hoy Stadium. A special half-time show will feature a tribute to the 1964 team in recognition of  their national championship win at the Shrine Bowl 40 years ago. 

The 1964 team was led by head coach Shanty Hogan and includes alumni players like Fred Carr (Green Bay Packers & NFL Hall of Fame), Robert Wallace (Chicago Bears), Craig Liston, Ray Mautz, Gil Lilienthal, Tony Fotinos, Steve Timarac, Skip Davis, Ron Harvill, Mel Kunaschk, Richard Castillo, and others. 

Approximately 30 players from the championship team will return to Phoenix College for this special tribute. They will all be inducted into the first Athletics Alumni Ring of Honor.

10.                         United Way FAQ's

Q. Is United Way a national or local organization?

A. Valley of the Sun United Way is a local, autonomous non-profit organization. Like the more than 1,400 United Way organizations across the country, they are governed by a local volunteer board of directors. Valley of the Sun United Way pays nominal dues to United Way of America exchange for important cost-saving services such as staff training, community research information, campaign products, National  advertising and ongoing information.

Q. Is my United Way contribution tax deductible?

A. Yes, your contribution is tax deductible if you itemize your donation. You may also qualify for a state tax credit by designating a portion of your gift to the Helping the Working Poor Fund. (See United Way representative for more information or visit the website at www.vsuw.org)

            Can bond monies be used for new programs?
