Come and enjoy a fun-filled day of music, giveaways, the football game against Dixie College and a tailgate party, complete with food. The game begins at 1:30 p.m.  Let's cheer the Bears to victory!

• If you're curious about the building and renovation plan proposed for Phoenix College, make plans to attend the presentation scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14. This will take place in the north staff dining room in Hannelly Center.

A Special Thanks for Making Homecoming a Success

• Phoenix College had such an exciting and successful JamBEARee Week.  I want to take this opportunity and thank all of those individuals who contributed to the planning and participation. Special thanks are in order to Kelly Loucy, director of student life and leadership and Frank Luna, director of alumni and development /scholarship relations. Their departments collaborated beautifully to plan the successful JamBEARee Week. I would also like to acknowledge each of the following departments for participating in the department decorating contest.  They include: Admissions & Records/Cashier’s Office/Information/Fiscal Office, Advisement Center, Communication/ASL/Theatre and Film, Dental, Financial Aid, Library, Marketing and Public Relations, CTE/Alumni/Family Care Center/Culinary Café, Reading and Recruitment and Retention.

Congratulations to our 2003 Homecoming Queen -  BSU member, Sharon Austin.  I also want to acknowledge all of this year’s nominees: Christine Bryant, Michelle DiMuria, Amina Hadziomerovic, Gilbertina Jackson and Karina Ybarra.

Netherlands Exchange Visitor

• Phoenix College would like to welcome Sisca van Schieveen of ROC Aventus College. She is participating in the Netherlands Exchange Program and will be staying with math instructor, Tom Adamson and his family.  Sisca will arrive at Phoenix College on Monday, Oct. 13 and will visit our campus for two weeks. Tom will travel to the Netherlands in May to experience his part of the exchange.

Louisiana Visitors

•The last day of this week will bring us visitors from Baton Rouge Community College. Dr. Myrtle Dorsey, chancellor of BRCC and four vice chancellors will be on campus from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. They will also visit SMCC and CGCC.

Recognition

• Dr. Geoffrey Eroe, faculty member in the Communication and Industrial Technology Departments, was nominated for three AriZoni Awards in scene design in the contracted theatre category. The nominations were for Rumors, Quiltmaker’s Gift and RobberBrideGroom. Geof won the Zoni for the Quiltmaker’s Gift. There were only two designers in the entire state to receive a Zoni for this category. Congratulations!

•Chef Scott Robinson, faculty member in the Culinary Studies Program, was featured in the Wednesday, Oct. 1, food section of The Arizona Republic.  The article featured his recipe for the “perfect cheese sauce.”

• The Phoenix College Alumni Association has been recognized with a major award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for pioneering work with the Phoenix College Achieving a College Education (ACE) Program. Alumni volunteers deliver financial literacy workshops to ACE students and parents.  The entry, entitled Phoenix College Alumni and Counseling Department Tackle Arizona’s High School Dropout Crisis, won in the category of “Best Practices in Alumni Relations – Collaboration with other campus units for 2003.”  This award represents almost two  years of hard work by dozens of PC alumni volunteers (especially members of the Half-Century Club board of directors), Counseling Department faculty and staff and the Office of Alumni & Development /Scholarship Relations.
The CASE awards program is highly competitive. Community colleges compete with numerous prestigious universities each year. This recognition of the PC Alumni Association is not only an affirmation by one of the most respected organizations in higher education, CASE, but it also speaks to the growing importance and value of community college alumni relations programs, still a relatively new phenomenon among two-year colleges. The award will be presented at the CASE conference to be held in Los Angeles in December.

• Thank you and congratulations are also in order for Anna Chavira, coordinator of the Career Advisement and Placement Center. Anna and other PC staff teamed with personnel from the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department to plan and co-host a conference at PC for 400 high school students last Saturday. Anna was assisted by several departments on campus that included Media Services, Maintenance and Operations, College Safety, Recruitment and Retention, Marketing and Public Relations, Facilities and the President's Office. Again, thanks to all who contributed to the success of this event.

• Congratulations to Phoenix College student, David Holguin. David purchased the winning ticket and received Mark Grace’s jersey at the end of Mark’s last game as a Diamondback.

• This Friday is the last day for Linda Anderson, the PC/Aramark cafeteria manager. Linda is moving to Colorado to continue work with Aramark in a new location. Please stop by to thank Linda, wish her well and to welcome Robert Miller, the new manager.
