• American Sewing Guild (ASG) – Phoenix Chapter
Last week I announced that the Family Care Center had received over 200 nap quilts for the children enrolled at the center. I am sharing the message below as it appeared in the ASG's October/November “Sew Far Sew Good” newsletter.  The Saturday Sergers is a unique group that meets regularly to promote sewing and to educate and inspire others. Many of these individuals have been students at Phoenix College.

A Deed of Thanks:
by Mary Goodman and Charlotte Sconone

“The moment the Saturday Sergers heard about the nap quilt project for Phoenix College we knew we had found the community service project for us. Nine years ago a group of strangers signed up to learn to use their sergers at Phoenix College with Marge Donner. Little did any of us know that a core group would emerge and grow into a sewing group of close to 40 members, some are even ASG members. We were therefore thrilled to be able to participate in ASG’s project and contribute 37 nap quilts. Thanks Phoenix College for what you inadvertently started.”

• What can ink colors communicate?
Information from a recent health care survey that focused on health care issues in the Valley's Asian community has implications for us as we reach out to emerging populations. The survey focused on Chinese and Vietnamese and survey takers found that 85% of respondents answered in their native languages. Valley health care providers also learned about the importance of being culturally aware in a number of areas, including the color of ink used in filling out paperwork. For example, red signifies Communism to Cambodians and celebration to Chinese, but to Koreans writing a name in red is equal to wishing that person dead. Purple is associated with funerals in the Vietnamese culture. I encourage you to have discussions with colleagues about what this information means to your department.

• United Way Update – The United Way Campaign is well on its way and I want to thank all of you who have participated so far. The amount that we have been asked to raise is $16,867 and we are at midpoint with a total of $8,000. I know that the generosity of the PC family will help us meet this goal as we support this District-wide effort.

Meeting Announcement

• For those of you who missed the first Master Plan presentation due to schedule conflicts, we are pleased to offer a second presentation for evening employee groups and community homeowners. If you missed the first presentation, mark your calendars for Thursday, Oct. 30 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The presentation will be held in the Willo Room – Osborn Campus. •Tom Adamson, math faculty, has been elected to the Executive Board of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges as treasurer.

•Our Model United Nations Team will attend the United Nations Day Flag-Raising Ceremony at Wesley Bolin Plaza this Friday, Oct. 24. Team members will also visit the Capitol during a special session as guests of House of Representatives member, Ken Clark.

• One of the Valley’s most sought after artists is currently showing his work in the Phoenix College Art Gallery.  International mask-maker, Zarco Guerrero has mounted more than 60 masks in a display entitled Caras y Máscaras. This collection of wearable masks was created specifically for theatre and dance companies in Phoenix and across the United States and Japan. His display also includes a tribute to farm worker leader César Chávez in celebration of Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

• This month’s Arizona Highways magazine features a photo spread by Phoenix College retiree, Dr. Tom Danielsen. Dr. Danielsen was residential faculty in the biology department from 1968-2001 and is now an active retiree. His reputation continues to grow as an outstanding photographer while he continues to teach at PC.
