1. Congratulations to Graphic Design student, M. Guadalupe Candanedo. She designed the winning logo for Commercial Cleaning Works (CCW), a new company based in Scottsdale. CCW recently held a logo design contest and more than 50 designs were submitted; however Guadalupe’s design was selected as the winner. She was presented with a check for $100. Additionally, she will receive a shirt with the embroidered logo. Great work!

2. Congratulations to PC Athletics. We have four spring teams competing in National Championships this year. Please join me in supporting our teams as they compete in upcoming championship games. They include:

Women’s Golf – The team leaves for Daytona Beach on May 15 for the national competition.
Men’s Golf - They recently placed 5th in the Region I Championships and will compete locally in the National Championships at Palm Valley Golf Course on May 24.
Track – The team just returned from the National Championships at South Plains Community College in Levelland, Texas where they posted the following results:

Magalay Barciaga – 11th 5000 meters
Alexis Easter – 14th 100 meters
Men’s 4 x 100 relay – 18th

3. Graduating Dental Hygiene students, Kim DeLeon, Fran Tocco, Shaun Walker and Jennifer Rebs were recently presented with the Denise Lust Memorial Scholarship by Denise’s husband, Michael Lust. Each of the recipients received a $250 scholarship during the Students of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association luncheon.  Denise was a 2001 graduate of our Phoenix College Dental Hygiene program, graduating at the top of her class. She was immediately hired as an adjunct faculty and was loved and respected by not only her students, but by her peers as well. She was an absolute gift to this college. Unfortunately, her life came to a tragic end on April 3, 2003 at the age of 42. This scholarship was established in her name.

4. A big thank you to Dr. Rose Pfefferbaum (Gerontology) for representing Phoenix College at the Arizona Center on Aging, University of Arizona’s statewide meeting on gerontology education in conjunction with the Governor’s Conference on Aging at the Sheraton Mesa Hotel. This statewide meeting is planned to assess the status of education in gerontology in Arizona and to begin development of a strategic plan for meeting statewide educational needs in gerontology in the community colleges and the state universities.
