1. Diane Mockbee, Gerontology adjunct faculty, has just been elected President of the National Association of Activity Professionals (NAAP). NAAP is the only national group that represents activity professionals exclusively in geriatric settings. The organization serves as a catalyst for professional growth and has come to be recognized as the voice of the activity profession on national issues concerning long term care facilities, assisted living, adult day services, retirement living and senior centers. Diane will be inducted into office at the upcoming national conference in Scottsdale this April. Congratulations Diane!

2.  Last week you read about the work being performed by PC in the community through our HSIAC grant.  A new component to be introduced is ESL instruction. The English ESL faculty (Nancy Meyers and Dr. Joseph Kimbuende) are working with Dr. Margaret Macias, Fred Amador, Cynthia Steele and Anna Chavira to schedule credit ESL classes at the community sites and staff them with ESL certified instructors. All of these faculty and their department chairs, Dr. Nancy Matte, English, and Queta Chavez, Counseling, are to be commended for their support of these efforts that strengthen our community.

3.  Four Phoenix College Fall 2003 athletic teams recently earned Academic All-American status. The teams include:
-Volleyball (Named Team of the Year) - 3.65 GPA
-Women's Soccer (2nd Highest GPA in the Nation) - 3.26 GPA
-Men's Cross Country (4th Highest GPA in the Nation) - 3.25 GPA
-Women's Cross Country (4th Highest GPA in the Nation) - 3.36 GPA
Congratulations to all of the hard working students, coaches, faculty mentors and all others who contributed to this teamwork. Earning this type and level of recognition illustrates our commitment to teaching and learning.
4.  Leonard Rodriguez has joined the Office of Institutional Advancement as Development Officer (OYO). As called for in the Strategic Goals, he will be working on a plan for long-term fundraising efforts to generate even greater community support for student scholarships, new initiatives, and other College needs beyond those funded through the budget process. This effort will build on our successful annual campaign, which brings in some $40,000 each year for PC student scholarships.
5.  Recently Dr. Anna Solley and Dr. Homero Lopez, co-chairs of the Prop 301 Proposal Review Committee, announced the approval of six proposals totaling $278,236 in awards. I am pleased to announce that the Phoenix College Medical Lab Assisting Healthcare II program was among those funded.

6.  Phoenix College was mentioned in the latest issue of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association Campaign For Caring Connection newsletter. Faculty and staff from our healthcare community will be participating in the upcoming Youth Day to Promote "Healthcare Careers for Life" on March 27 on our campus. We thank you for your dedication to this event.
7.  If you look toward the Dalby and Administration buildings these days, you can see our newest campus landmarks. Three flags have been raised in the Dalby plaza and the banners of the USA, Arizona, and Phoenix College proudly wave over the eastern entrance to the college. That's right, Phoenix College now has an official flag! Two actually - one bearing the official service logo of the college and another bearing the pride logo of the Bear paw, which can be flown at athletic events.
8.  On March 4-5, students and members of the community will have an opportunity to discover that math can be humorous, fun and exciting at "Math Connections," a two-day math awareness event at Phoenix College.  Nearly 1000 students, faculty, and members of the community attended last year's event.

All presentations will take place in the Willo Room on the Osborn Campus. Sessions will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and get underway on Friday at 9 a.m. For more information, please call the Math Department at (602) 285-7151.

9.  Phoenix College will host approximately 250 middle school students and their teachers on Friday, March 5, 2004 in celebration of Foreign Language Month.  The children have been invited from Sunland School, Ed Pastor School, Osborn Middle School, and Magnet Traditional School.

For additional information contact, Loida Gutierrez at 602-285-7722

10.  Special thanks to Casandra Kakar, Jesse Garcia, and Kendra Charts, Community Education/Custom Training and Education for their hard work in planning and hosting the Phase IV session of the Phoenix College President's Roundtable held on February 23, 2004.

Reports from seven groups were heard and three common themes that emerged were the need to report to the community about PC's results; a community guide and a need for service learning.

11.  Congratulations to Gary Imel and the Phoenix College Theatre on their winning of many awards from the  American College Theatre Festival (Western Regional) held in February, 2004.

Gary Imel won the Excellence in Theatre Education Award.  This is a huge honor, that was bestowed upon only six other theatre educators in the Western Region.
