2. The following Action Items were approved at last night's
Governing Board Meeting:

  • Increase primary property taxes on existing property by 2%, which equals $5,080,257 in additional property tax revenues.
  • Transfer of the remaining funds from the Cigna reserve account in the Quasi-Endowment fund to partially cover increased medical premium costs in fiscal Year 2003-04.
  • 2004-05 district-wide budget totaling $989,777,965.  This amount includes the $190.3 million for new capital development expenditures should the voters approve the bond.  Should this not be approved, these resources will not be expended.
  • 2004-05 budget for the Teacher Prep Charter High School.
  • Adopted a resolution designating the Vice Chancellor for Business Services as an authorized officer to make declarations of intent to reimburse expenditures for the proceeds to tax-exempt bonds.
  • Resolution ordering and calling a special bond election for November 2, 2004.
  • Adopted the language of the bond question and adopted the following statement in support of the bond:
"Vote YES for the Maricopa Community Colleges"
3. Math instructor, Tom Adamson, recently returned from a four week trip to the Netherlands.  Tom reported that after an 11 hour flight, a 3 hour layover in London, and a 9 hour time difference, the next few weeks were a whirl of activity.  Some of his activities included:
  • Tried, unsuccessfully, to learn Dutch
  • Observed classes in Dutch as a second language, math for automotive students, classes for mentally challenged adults, math classes in traditional middle schools, and at a high school for gifted students where most of the classes were taught in English
  • Spent one day on a walking tour of Amsterdam and visited the house of Anne Frank
  • Visited many schools and universities
  • Enjoyed visiting the local fishing villages and eating the local cuisine
Tom claims that his trip was a great experience!  So the next time you see Tom, ask him about his experiences in the Netherlands.
