1.  Dr. Phil Tate (Biology) and John Arle (Biology) recently attended the annual conference of the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society  in Calgary, Canada.  This past year, Dr. Tate served as president of the organization.  John begins his term as curriculum and instruction co-chair of the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society.  Additionally, he presented his latest online instruction pedagogies and results for Human Anatomy & Physiology in a workshop forum.

2.  The Phoenix College Continuing Dental Education Programs have received exemplary reviews for design features for online courses.  (Debby Kurtz-Weidinger is responsible for designing all of the award-winning courses.)

In a review of websites in oral health, a team from the National Dental Educators Journal, evaluated 56 websites and the Phoenix College courses came out number one over universities such as UCLA, Columbia School of Dentistry and Loyola University Health System.

Congratulations to Debby Kurtz-Weidinger (Dental) and the Dental Program!  We applaud you and your excellent work.

3.  New Assignments:

Scholarship Coordinator - July 1, Sue Burrola, who has finished her term as district PSA president for 2003 - 2004 will move into the job of scholarship coordinator on a permanent basis.

Sue brings with her close to 20 years experience as a PC employee, including duties in Admissions and Records and the Dean of Instruction's Office.  Sue also has experience in the non-profit/foundation arena and has represented PC and PSA well as PSA district president.  We look forward to Sue continuing the exceptional work started by Connie Miller and I hope you will join me in welcoming her back to campus.

Interim Director of Recruitment & Retention - Please welcome Michael Hubbs as the interim director of recruitment and retention.  Mike will be replacing Rebecca Valenzuela while she is on leave for one year.  Mike was a program advisor and PC faculty member before accepting this position.

Interim Assistant to Dean of Administrative Services - Let's also welcome Linda Piña to the Administrative Services Office.  Linda has accepted a temporary assignment as administrative assistant to the dean for Donna Cole while she is on leave.

Interim Dean of Instruction - Casandra Kakar will begin new duties as interim dean of instruction on July 1, 2004.

Let's welcome all of these individuals to their new roles.

4.  I would also like to acknowledge and thank Connie Miller for serving in the position of scholarship coordinator on an interim basis. When the scholarship coordination process transitioned to the Office of Alumni & Development from Financial Aid, it called for someone with a passion for PC and a new adventure.  Connie has built a strong framework. Good luck, Connie, as you move upward and onward!

7.  Below is the message sent to the PC family sent on June 22, 2004:

After 31 years of service to the Maricopa Community College District, Marian Tadano has informed me today of her intention to retire as dean of instruction effective June 30, 2004.  Marian's career at Phoenix College began with her selection as a faculty member in 1973. She joined the administrative ranks when tapped for the role of senior associate dean of instruction and has served as dean of  instruction for the last six years.

Marian has performed tireless work in her capacity as DI over the years.  Most recently, she has been instrumental in establishing the structure that will serve us well as we proceed with our self study.  Please join me in thanking Marian for her dedication to Phoenix College, congratulating her on a distinguished career and wishing her well as she settles into a different pace in the active retirement program.

8.  “Prop 401 Question of the Week”
How are the bonds paid for and how much will the passage of the 2004 bond cost me as an individual taxpayer?

The bonds are paid from property taxes levied on all property owners in Maricopa County.  For a home valued at $100,000, the annual cost will average $15.83, about $1.32 per month or 30 cents a week.
