1. Mr. Clovis Campbell, Sr., 1952 graduate of Phoenix College and brother of governing board member, Don Campbell, passed away on Friday, June 18, 2004.  Mr. Campbell was the first African-American in the Arizona Senate and co-owner of the Arizona Informant, the state's oldest Black newspaper.  He was also a member of PC's Alumni Association African-American chapter and recipient of the Black Student Union's Living Legend Award.  Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26th at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1401 E. Madison St. in Phoenix.  Mr. Campbell was a dedicated alumni donor and volunteer.  He will be greatly missed.

2.  The Phoenix College Testing Center is contributing to homeland security by helping security screeners become workforce ready.  Phoenix College is only one of three testing sites in Arizona authorized to administer the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security screening test.  In the years following 9/11, the TSA revamped the hiring and training process for transportation security screeners, making it a federal government position.

The TSA is only one of many tests that the PC Testing Center offers.  The center provides General Education Development (GED) testing, AZ & US Constitution testing for Teacher Certification, a host of licensing tests and most standardized aptitude tests.

In 2002 and 2003, the testing Center received the Model Program for GED Test Administration Award and the Outstanding Efforts in Special Needs Accommodations Award from the Arizona Department of Education.

3. Phoenix College has been asked  to partner with Channel 33-Univision in the program titled "A Su Lado (By Your Side)."  The program will air on Thursday, July 1, 2004 from 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm. and from 10:00 pm to 10:30 pm.  The goal is to provide information about community colleges in the greater Phoenix area.  The format will be similar to a telethon as it will have phone banks with community college employee volunteers manning the phones and addressing the public's questions.  The program is also a partnership with the Phoenix Think Tank, including SMCC and GWCC.

4. The HLC/NCA Self-Study Steering Committee met recently for an all-day retreat.  In attendance were the Criterion Chairs: Denny Sheehan, Anne Roselle, Mike Mitchell, Karen Christen and Queta Chavez.  Also in attendance were: Corina Gardea, Marian Gibney, Marian Tadano, Brent Jameson, and  Adriana Loera.  The group reviewed the successes achieved thus far, discussed some of the common themes that are surfacing in all five criteria, and continued planning for the upcoming year.

The group learned that the proposal submitted by Darrell Carnahan and Mike Mitchell was accepted as best practice presentation at the Higher Learning Commission meeting in November 2004 in Indianapolis.

7. "Prop 401" Question of the Week"
How much is the bond and what are the timeframes for repayment and construction?  The Maricopa Community Colleges will ask voters to approve $951,359,000 in General Obligation Bonds in November 2004.  Each bond issue will be repaid over a period of no more than 20 years. The buildings built by these bonds should be completed within 10 years.
