1.  A special thank you goes out to all individuals involved in making our Day of Learning such a wonderful success.  I would especially like to thank Arlene Martinsen, Debbie Ermoian and Sara Soller for their hard work and dedication, which went into the planning and organization of the event.

2.  Additionally, individuals attending the Technology Fair had a chance to win an assortment of door prizes from Troxell Communications.  Congratulations to the following winners:

-Judy Boschult, English – Hitachi DVD camcorder
-Rhonda Wilson, AJS/Criminal Justice – Olympus binoculars
-Santos Vega, History – Hitachi DVD/VCR combo
-Damarys Lacayo-Salas, English – leather jacket
-Maria Fidazzo, Dental – Hitachi golf bag
-Gene Heppard, Learning Center – Hitachi beach towel
-Benjamin Soller, ESL - Hitachi beach towel
-Rosalind ONeil, Gerontology - Hitachi beach towel

3.  The Phoenix College Legal Assisting Program was highlighted in the January issue of the national trade publication, Legal Assistant Today.  The article focused on the college’s unique application of technology in the instruction of Legal Research and the cooperative arrangement with the Library Department in utilizing the laptops in the multipurpose room.

4.  Congratulations to Dr. Linda Kurth!  A one-time $500 Helping Hands scholarship has been created in her honor through the generosity of former student Diane Waterfield.  The scholarship will be awarded to one or more Applied Business students.  We are fortunate for your wonderful teaching and connecting with students.

5.  Attention Club Advisors - Please note that student clubs are now under new regulations regarding their food sales.

The Maricopa County Health Department has recently taken the stance that all student club and staff food sales are subject to review and the same health inspection standards as Aramark, our food service provider.  In addition, they have stated that Aramark will have the points from the inspection of student food service activities attributed to their license and ratings.  Aramark has agreed to work with the Office of Student Life and Leadership to ensure that they meet the Health Department standards.  With these new standards, students will need to be trained on the Health Department procedures and guidelines and will follow those guidelines with all food-related activities.  Aramark’s food service manager is the key contact for student groups.

An alternative is for each club or group to purchase a one-time permit for $60 for their events; however, this severely limits the potential for the clubs to raise substantial funds.

Both Dean of Student Development, Morris Johnson and Director of Student Life & Leadership, Kelly Loucy will be looking at ways to assist clubs and sponsors.

6.  Guadalajara Language and Culture Program – A reminder to those interested in applying for the faculty/staff culture and language immersion program in Guadalajara, Mexico.  The duration of the program is from July 5 – 23, 2004.  Applications must be submitted to the PC International Student Center, attention: Annette Duran, no later than Feb. 13, 2004.  For more information, please call Annette Duran at (602) 285-7564.

7.  Nursing Faculty member, Suzanne Vande Putte, is away from Phoenix College and working with the Arizona Department of Health Services in the Department of Hospital and Community Preparedness and Response.  She writes that she is involved in the state-wide delivery of training for first responders in bio-terrorism.  She is also creating guidelines to integrated disaster preparedness in the nursing curriculum as required by hospitals.
