ACHIEVEMENTS

• Congratulations to Dan Hooper, Music and the Phoenix College Choir.  They were featured in a recent edition of the Kiwanis Club newsletter, The Sun Dial, for their festive holiday performance.  According to Dan, the Phoenix College Choir has been performing at the Kiwanis Holiday luncheon for 56 years.  What a wonderful tradition!

• Diane Mockbee, Gerontology adjunct faculty, will be speaking on six different topics in conjunction with National Activity Professionals Week at the Bermuda Activity Professional Association this week.  She will also give the opening keynote address at the South Carolina Activity Professional's Association conference in February.  She will present five sessions during the conference.

National Activity Professionals Week will be celebrated Jan. 18-23 to honor activity professionals who work with our elderly nationwide and in Bermuda and Canada.  These are dedicated professionals who provide quality of life for elders in long term care, assisted living, adult day care, independent living and Alzheimer’s care settings.

STATEGIC PLANNING COUNCIL UPDATES

• The Action Teams are now focusing on the implementation phase of the Strategic Planning process.  Currently the teams are working on 11 actions identified for completion this year.  With great excitement, we are pleased to report that progress is being made on all action items.  We will report on the progress being made in the areas of Climate Study, Service Excellence and Student Success Indicators.

Climate Study  - The team is moving forward with expected RFP selections.  Their survey should be out this semester.

Service Excellence – The team has met on three different occasions – focusing on the education of service excellence.  The team has also discussed the importance of becoming observers of service before developing the service model.  A retreat will be held this semester to develop the model and service standards.  They will also rename the team to fit PC.

Student Success Indicators – President Gardea and Deans Marian Tadano and Dr. Jim Moore reported that their team had conducted a review of the vision and mission as part of their process.  A matrix was created to match key components of the vision/mission with the Strategic goals so that metrics could be developed.  The process will continue in order for all Goals and key indicators to be developed.

District Faculty Convocation

Phoenix College was honored to host the annual Spring Faculty Convocation in Bulpitt Auditorium last Friday. Those in attendance heard remarks delivered by Chancellor Glasper and Faculty Executive Council President Dr. Willie Minor. Mr. Kenneth Wesson informed and amused the audience with his presentation entitled What All Educators Should Know About Learning and the Human Brain: Neuroscience and Brain-Considerate Learning.

I want to extend thanks to all Phoenix College employees who played a role in preparing our campus to host this successful meeting. Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick, Director of the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction, has sent her thanks and those from the Convocation Planning Committee. She stated that our staff was “responsive, flexible and very professional.” Again, thanks and praise to all of you for being excellent ambassadors.
