1. BG Bowley (Transportation Services) recently taught a class in defensive driving for lifelong learners. The National Safety Council Defensive Driving course helps individuals identify problematic driving conditions and unsafe driving behaviors. BG will also teach a course in automotive know-how for the non-mechanic, a hands-on class that will help individuals inspect their own vehicles and provide tips for proper car maintenance and vehicle safety.  The class will meet in B-101 from 10:00 a.m. until noon for two Saturdays, 2/28/04 and 3/06/04.  The course fee is $10.  For additional information, please contact the senior adult program at 285-7191 or BG at 285-7536.

2. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the American Heart Walk this past Saturday. Phoenix College had more than 30 walkers and raised over $2,000. Also, I would like to recognize Marlene Strickland (Employee Services) for all of her hard work in organizing our college's outstanding participation in the event, as well as Phillip Scharf (Employee Services) for being Bumstead for the day. Thanks for being great ambassadors!

3.   Comparison enrollment figures for Spring 2003 and 2004 have been released and Phoenix College enrollment experienced a slight increase.  Thanks to everyone involved in this process.

2003 - Total Headcount - 13,107 and FTSE - 5,822
2004 - Total Headcount - 13,160 and FTSE - 5,865

Our total Headcount number increased by 0.4 percent and our total FTSE numbers increased by 0.74 percent

4. Recently Phoenix College counselors Dr. Margaret Macias, Fred Amador and Cynthia Steele facilitated a planning session on goal setting and developing a mission statement for the Tenant Council and residents of Marcos de Niza housing community. Marcos de Niza is a HUD subsidized public housing community of more than 500 residents. The HSIAC grant has allowed Phoenix College to work with these residents and those in surrounding neighborhoods over the last year, providing them with occupational classes, ESL instruction and Leadership training.

Through this unique relationship, Phoenix College is making a difference in our local neighborhoods by facilitating the training of leaders and helping them improve their communities and the lives of their children.  Additionally, I want to recognize Anna Chavira, interim HISAC program coordinator, for agreeing to oversee this grant on an interim basis.
