1.   I would like to recognize and commend those individuals who volunteered for the 6th Annual Caring Hands Clinic.  The event allowed students, local dentists, hygienists and assistants an opportunity to serve 42 children from the Jack Kuban School in Phoenix.  Volunteers provided preventive dental hygiene treatment, including cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, x-rays, oral hygiene instruction and dental exams.  The donated services valued more than $8,700.

Additionally, I want to thank five alumni from the Class of 2003 who took special interest in this event and provided lunch for all the children and their families, as well as the volunteers.  Marsha Bruns, Rene Bruns, Maria Vittal, Carla Christopher Martinez and Annie Westervelt prepared and funded approximately 125 meals for the event.  Also, alumnus Maria Napier, served in the clinic throughout the day assisting students.

2.  The Phoenix College Business Department will award $16,300 in scholarships to 45 Business students for the Spring semester during a recognition ceremony on Feb. 19.  Students will receive scholarships ranging from  $100 to $500.

Please mark you calendars - the recognition ceremony will get underway at 6:30 p.m. in the Bulpitt Auditorium and will include special guest and keynote speaker, Mariel Pereyra.  Pereyra is a Phoenix College alumnus and former employee.  She was also recognized and nominated for Outstanding Senior for Supply Chain Management at ASU and recently accepted a position at Honeywell.  She is a true inspiration to students and is an excellent example of the caliber of the students at Phoenix College.  It is a true pleasure to welcome her back to the college.

3.  An inventory report recently released by the District reveals that write-offs/losses for FY 02-03 have declined tremendously since the first inventory was completed in FY 98-99.  The total value of losses declined from $6.1 million to $2.3 million.  Phoenix College losses declined from 12 percent to less than 1 percent from FY 00-01 to FY 02-03.  This success can be attributed to the Phoenix College Inventory Task Force, which includes representatives from Media Services, Technology Support Group, College Safety, M&O, Receiving and Business Services.

4.  Congratulations to Route and Construction Surveying instructors, Jim Cristea and John Rose.  Their students were recently featured in the Gilbert Independent for their efforts and involvement with the AZ Center of Population Monument.  Gilbert was recently recognized as the fastest growing large municipality in the United States and this monument will mark its exact point of geographical interest in McQueen Park.  Great work!

5.  Congratulations to Dr. Patricia Zaccardo, English Department!  The Arizona Republic featured her Literature of Science Fiction course and students on the front page of the Local section.
