ACHIEVEMENTS

 
  • Congratulations to Kristin A. Anderson, Dental Programs, for being selected to receive the Chair Academy's 2004 International Exemplary Leadership Award. Kristin is being recognized for her ability to advance academic and administrative leadership on campus. She will be honored at the Chair Academy's 13th Annual International Conference in Reston, Virginia on March 6, 2004. In addition to receiving the special award in Virginia, Kristin's photo will be featured on the Chair Academy's website during 2004 and she will be recognized in the Academy's spring juried journal of Academic Leadership. Congratulations Kristin!
  • Annette Duran, director of the International Education Center was asked to submit an article to the International Student Guide, Latin America edition, and the article is now featured in their print edition and on their web site. Phoenix College is now represented internationally in efforts to increase our international student enrollment. Thanks to Annette for keeping our visibility prominent at the international level.   • The Phoenix College Model United Nations team has returned home with awards once again. The most recent Model United Nations International Conference took place in Chicago last week. Dr. Albert Celoza, chair of the Liberal Arts Department and his students captured three distinguished awards.
    • Outstanding Delegation Award (First Committee) 
      • Students Carlos Espinoza and Henry Alzate
    • Outstanding Delegation Award (Second Committee) 
      • Students Alan Heckman and Jennifer Gartner
    • Outstanding Delegation Award (Overall Best Delegation) 


    Only five delegations received the Outstanding Delegation Award out of 131 groups present. This award was determined through peer nomination and selection among the more than 2000 delegates in attendance. Congratulations to Dr. Celoza and students for such outstanding achievements!
     

  • Congressman Ed Pastor will visit Phoenix College on Friday, December 5th as a guest of Dr. Albert Celoza. He will address students in a World Politics class that morning. We are honored by his visit and thank Dr. Celoza, chair of the Liberal Arts Department for being such a gracious host.
     
  • Congratulations to Dr. Camilla Westenberg, English, and her students in Rap Literature: The Oral Tradition. KPHO – TV 5 featured the class during a recent 10 p.m. broadcast. At the end of the show the anchor stated, “Phoenix College is in good company for similar classes are also offered at Harvard, Vanderbilt and Columbia. 
  • Our two student nominees for the All-USA Academic Team are Christine L. Bryant and Gileana R. Raheem. This prestigious national competition is co-sponsored by USA Today, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society 
    Last year there were nearly 1,500 applications from 800 community and technical colleges. Nominees to the All-USA Academic Team gain many scholarship opportunities simply by being nominated. More than 1,000 nominees received media attention through 34 All-State Academic Team
    recognition programs - of which AZ is one. Notifications will go out for the All-USA Academic Teams on February 23,
    2004.
Retirement
  • I want to thank Arlene Dulsky for her dedication and service to Phoenix College. Everyone is invited to come to the office of Custom Training and Education on Thursday, December 4 from noon to 2 p.m. to wish Arlene a wonderful retirement. This office is located at the Osborn Campus.

  • Mark your calendar for the end-of-semester celebration taking place on December 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. This is a time to celebrate the completion of another semester, reflect on the end of another year and recognize PC employees for years of service and other good reasons. The place and program details are forthcoming.
