• Dr. Cleopatria Martinez, mathematics, will participate in the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in January at the Phoenix Civic Plaza. Dr. Martinez will be a panelist in a discussion on supporting the diverse personal lives of mathematicians, sponsored by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). The discussion will address challenges faced by mathematicians in the context of their personal lives. More than 4,500 mathematicians are expected to attend and other professional societies involved in the meetings include the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics, the National Association of Mathematicians, and the Association of Symbolic Logic. The Joint Mathematics Meetings are held for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research, and providing communication in the field. The meetings serve to preserve, supplement and utilize the research results of mathematicians worldwide. • Congratulations to the Phoenix College Alumni Association and the Counseling Department for their commitment and dedication to the Achieving a College Education (ACE) Program. Their efforts received high accolades during the recent Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII Annual Conference where the Phoenix College Alumni Association (PCAA) received the Gold Medal Award of Excellence for 2003. The ACE Program provides the opportunity for a cohort of high school students to enroll at PC beginning in their junior year of high school. Students attend classes on Saturdays and during summer. The Alumni Association’s entry, entitled Phoenix College Alumni and Counseling Department Tackle Arizona’s High School Dropout Crisis, won in the category of “Best Practices in Alumni Relations – College Division.” The Achieving a College Education (ACE) Program focuses on the ground breaking collaboration between the PCAA and the Counseling Department to deliver financial literacy workshops to students and parents in the program. • Congratulations to the Phoenix College Baseball team. Team members were featured during a morning broadcast on Fox 10. Additionally, members of A.L.E. were featured on Radio Amor. We applaud your enthusiasm and PC spirit.
