As
a high school player at Carl Hayden High School, Kelly McRee was
all everything on the basketball court. As a results, many big time
colleges came a callin' for her services. And the winner was...the
University of Wyoming.
As a freshman for the Lady Cowgirls, McRee saw very
limited playing time and knew it was in her best interest to transfer
to another school. Wyoming's loss was Phoenix College's gain.
McRee is currently second in the ACCAC in scoring
and rebounding and one the main reasons that the Lady Bears are
number one in the nation.
According to McRee, the key to her success is being
happy. "This is the most fun I have ever had playing basketball.
We get along so well as a team, " said McRee.
While PC Head Coach Liza Oakley wanted McRee to join
the Lady Bears, the guard's decision on her new home was swayed
by the same coach that wanted her.
"The coaches here have taught me how to be aggressive
and take the ball to the hoop more," said McRee. "I never
used to do that as much as I do now".
Kelly has also learned lessons off the court as the
Lady Bears adopted a child for the Christmas season and brightened
up her holiday with gifts. "It was cool. The best thing someone
can do for somebody is to give back. It makes you feel good inside
knowing that you are helping others.
With the four year schools again clamoring for her
services, McRee has some unfinished business with the Lady Bears.
"We want to win the league and go on from there,"
said McRee. "We know that if we play to our potential, then
the only ones that can beat us are ourselves.
