There
are a few conclusions that immediately come to mind when watching
the Phoenix College Women's Basketball Team play. First, it is a
fact that they really are that good and the number one nation ranking
is an earned honor. Second, it is easily seen that the players enjoy
each other and have fun on the court. Finally, the young lady wearing
the uniform with the number 24 on the back is all over the court.
Meet Nicole Hommel, the reigning ACCAC Freshman of
the Year. Not only is she all over the court, but she is also all
over the ACCAC weekly stat reports. Hommel is the only player in
the ACCAC to be listed in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals.
These numbers and her style of play prove that she has a deep-seeded
determination not to let the Lady Bears fall short in the NJCAA
Region 1 Division 2 Championship Game again this season.
After falling one game short of a trip to the National
tourney a season ago, the Springerville native took a different
approach to get ready for this season.
"I just took a break and got away from basketball,
"said Hommel. "However, to really start improving my game,
I started playing against the guys."
She also improved her overall game by picking up the
pace on the defensive end of the court. "I learned to move
my feet playing defense," said Hommel. "Coach (Liza) Oakley
really motivates you to play tough D."
When the time comes to depart Phoenix College, Hommel
will take with her a lot of good memories.
" I have really enjoyed all the different people
I have met and also all the pranks we have played on coach,"
said Hommel.
And, when the time to move on comes, the choice of
where basketball will take her is hers to make. With many NCAA Division
I schools calling on her services, Hommel seems to have narrowed
her choices to Kansas State or Oklahoma.
But, that is next year. There is some unfinished business
to do here at PC as a Lady Bear. The final goal for Hommel and her
teammates will be to take that next step...a Championship step that
will have them going on to the National Championship Tournament
in Hagerstown, Maryland.
