Phoenix College Bears Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Head Coach Matt Gordon

Matt Gordon is in his first year as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Phoenix College. Gordon, a former NCAA Division I assistant Coach, came to Phoenix after serving as the Director of Operations for Double Pump Inc. Double Pump Inc. is perhaps the most powerful organization in College Basketball Recruiting.

Coach Gordon served as the Director of Player Development and assisted in recruiting in the West Coast Conference at the University Of Portland from 2001-2003. He also spent a year at Dominican University where he helped guide the Penguins to a 12-game increase in victories from the previous year and a spot in the league championship game.

Before going to Dominican, Gordon spent a year at Cal State Northridge where he was part of a coaching staff that helped lead the Matadors to their first 20 win season.

Coach Gordon graduated from UCLA where he was a Student Assistant for four years. During his tenure at UCLA, the Bruins went to four straight NCAA tournaments, reaching the Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen in two of those years.

Matt is married to Iris Gordon, who is the strength and conditioning coordinator at Phoenix College.

Gordon talks about his new job, "I am extremely excited to take over the basketball program at Phoenix College. I look forward to making a difference in the lives of all the players that I am privileged enough to coach while I am here at Phoenix College."

Gordon talks about the importance of academics and graduation, "It is my job here to make sure that every student-athlete that I coach graduates with his AA, so they can go on to a four-year institution because without their AA they cannot go on and play basketball at the next level if they so desire."

 



Assistant Coach Vernon Holmes

Coach Vernon Holmes enters his first year as a part of the Phoenix College Men's Basketball Staff. Coach Holmes brings valuable experience to Coach Gordon's staff because of his knowledge of the game and his recruiting ties to the Phoenix area. Before coming to Phoenix College, Vernon spent the past 5 years as an assistant coach at Millenium High School in Goodyear, AZ. Vernon also coached basketball and football at Aqua Fria High School for 3 years. Coach Holmes also spent 8 years in the United States Air Force, where he played and coached basketball.

Vernon is married to his wife Ruth and they have three children, Ryan, Bradley, and Ashley.


Assistant Coach Shaun Coleman

Entering his first year as an assistant coach with the men's basketball program, Shaun will bring with him great experience. Coleman's knowledge and experience evolves from being a successful collegiate basketball player at Sterling College and also from being a successful coach over the past 5 years. Before coming over to the men's program at Phoenix College, Coach Coleman helped coached the women's team at the college. Coleman also, coached the USS Nimitz Women's Varsity Team and was able to transform the program in only one year. The program prior to Coleman taking over had a record of 3-11 and Coleman turned that around quickly the following year and went 10-2 making it to the championship finals and finishing as tournament champion runner's -up. Gordon is excited about the addition of Coleman and feels confident that he will make an immediate impact on the program.

Student Assistant Coach Jeremy Blake

Jeremy Blake is currently the student assistant coach for the Phoenix College Bears'' Basketball Team. Jeremy redshirted last year for the men's basketball team at Phoenix College and this year Coach Gordon asked him to join the coaching staff at Phoenix College. Jeremy is in charge of video, practice coordination, and statistics for the PC basketball team.

Jeremy plans on attending a four year school next year and fill the same position in the basketball program at the college that
he attends. Jeremy is finishing his Associates Degree and looks to major in Sports Management next year.
