2004-2005 Phoenix College Men's Basketball Game Notes


Yavapai Slips Past Phoenix

Phoenix College's Men's Basketball suffered a tough loss to defending ACCAC Champion Yavapai College 70-67. The Bears ran out to an early lead at home before Yavapai (2-0, 1-0) closed the half with a run to move ahead 37-32 at the break. Yavapai continued to build the lead as the Bears (1-3, 0-1) fell behind by as many as eight midway through the second half.

PC battled back to force a tie game with just over two minutes to play in regulaton. The Bears were unable to overtake the leadeds in the end as Yavapai connected on 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the closing minutes.

Major Willete led Phoenix with 21 points and George Kirby recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.


Scottsdale Scores Win Over Bears

The Phoenix College Bears suffered another close defeat at the hands of Scottsdale Community College 63-58. Neither team led by more than six points the entire game, with each team struggling to gain control.

PC had its chances to put some distance between themselves and Scottsdale early in the contest but came up empty on too many offensive possessions to take control of the game. Scottsdale
did a good job of making plays at the end in order to secure the home victory.

The Bears were led by George Kirby with 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Scottsdale was led by Ladi Makinde and Curtis Scott with 15 points each.


Scottsdale Scores Win Over Bears

PC dropped another hard fought battle at Cochise on Saturday night. The Bears had a hard time scoring in the first half which was a result of Cochise tough man to man defense. The Bears battled back from a 13-point halftime deficit to cut the lead to one point midway through the second half, but Cochise regained momentum with a run of their own and went ahead by 15 points.

However, there was no quit in the Bears as they came back again to trim the lead to three points and had a chance to tie the came with just under a minute remaining, but a three-point shot by Ramon Ramirez came up a little short.

The Bears were led by Major Willette's game high 24 points, while George Kirby added 14 points and 7 rebounds.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday December 8th against Glendale College.


Phoenix Falls on Road to Glendale

Despite 21 points from scoring leader Ramon Ramirez, Phoenix College fell in a road ACCAC contest at Glendale 98-87. David Lopez added 16 points for the Bears.


Bears Battle Before Losing
at Eastern Arizona

The Phoenix College Bears suffered another heart breaker at the hand of Eastern Arizona last night. Eastern scored on a driving layup with one second remaining to secure a 75-73 home victory.

The Bears battled back from a 15-point second half defecit to tie the game with 18 seconds left, but were unable to get a final stop to send the game into overtime.

The Bears were led by Blue Stafford, who came off the bench to score 15 points. Major Willette chipped in with 12 points.

The Phoenix College Bears played their best basketball to date in this weekends Scottsdale Holiday Classic, by beating Tierra Del Sol in a closely contested contest and giving the College of Southern Idaho, the #4 ranked NJCAA Division I team in the country, a battle to the end.

In the first game, the Bears took a 10-0 lead to start the game against CSI, and held the lead until 4 minutes to go in the game, when the Golden Eagles took advantage of their huge size advantage to pull away in the last few minutes. Coach Arnold, the head coach of Southern Idaho, said "This was by far the toughest game that we played this year, they (Phoenix College) played extremely hard and were very well coached, alot
of struggles tonight were caused by their execution."

The Golden Eagles came into the game with an average margin of victory of 38 points.

The Bears were lead by Major Willette's team high 23 points to go along with his 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

In the second game, PC beat a very good Tierra Del Sol team to notch their second win the season. The Bears were once again involved in a very tight game that was
decided in the last minute. The Bears battled back from a four point halftime deficit, to secure the one point victory. The Bears went up for good as Dave Lopez hit one of two free throws with 4 seconds left.

The PC Bears were lead by George Kirby's 25 points and 10 Rebounds, while 4 other Bears scored in double figures.

Grand Canyon JV

Phoenix College defeated Grand Canyon JV 87-51 as Ramon Ramirez paced the Bears with 22 points.


Bears Win First Game in 2005
Over the FIT (NY)

Phoenix College scored an 84-79 victory over the Fashion Institute of Technology (NY). Major Willette paced the Bears with 23 points while George Kirby added 21 points.


Bears Score 83-58 ACCAC
Victory Over Chandler-Gilbert

Phoenix College travelled to Chandler-Gilbert and scored an 83-58 road ACCAC victory. The victory is the fourth straight win for the Bears. The key to the game for PC was its best defensive effort of the year as it held Chandler-Gilbert to 58 points on 41% shooting and forced 20 turnovers. Nathan Robinson led Phoenix with 19 points while George Kirby grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.


PC Wins Fifth Straight
in Win Over Mesa

The Bears came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Mesa College 76-75. PC's comeback was led by Sascha Stafford's career-high 22 points off the bench. The Bears also got good bench production from Jason Malone and Jourdin Holdin, who also helped lead
the comeback. The win marked the fifth straight victory for the Bears after dropping seven straight. The Bears travel to Central Arizona this weekend.


Central Arizona Ends Bears Win Streak

Phoenix College's men's hoops squad saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with an 81-70 ACCAC road loss to Central Arizona. Major Willette paced the Bears with 25 points while Nate Robinson added 14 points.


Pima Eases Past Bears 86-82

George Kirby posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as PC lost a close 86-82 ACCAC decision to Pima at home.



AZ Western Defeats PC Bears

Arizona Western scored a 93-63 ACCAC victory over Phoenix College. Major Willette paced the Bears with 15 points and four assists.


PC Wins Big Over Southwestern College

The Bears returned to the woin column with an 81-58 victory over Southwestern College as Nathan Robinson led four PC players in double figures with 15 points.


Bears Best ACCAC Foe South Mountain

Phoenix College scored a home ACCAC victory 74-70 over South Mountain on Wednesday. Nate Robinson led PC with 20 points, while Blue Stafford posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.


PC Defeats Scottsdale 76-73

Phoenix College won its third consecutive game and its eight in 11 outings with a 76-73 ACCAC victory over Scottsdale. The Bears were led by Nate Robinson's 15 points, while Dave Lopez and Ramon Ramirez scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.


Cochise Holds Off Bears

The Bears took to the road on Wednesday and dropped an 88-82 decision to Cochise in an ACCAC tilt.


PC Scores ACCAC Win Over Glendale

The Bears defeated Glendale 85-77 as George Kirby posted a double-double with 23 points and 17 rebounds. Nate Robinson tallied 20 points and Jourdin Holdin sparked PC in the second half with eight points in 13 minutes off of the bench.


Bears Earn Road Win Over Yavapai

The Phoenix College Bears posted a good road win against second place Yavapai College 82-77. The Bears were led by sophomore guards David Lopez, who had 28 points, Nathan Robinson, who added 20 points, and Major Willette, who recorded his first double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 assists.

The Bears shot a season high 52% from beyond the arc. The win is the second in a row for the Bears and they have also won 10 out of their last 14 games. Phoenix College continues play at home this Saturday against Eastern Arizona at 4:00pm.


Bears Fall to Eastern Arizona

The Bears hosted Eastern Arizona in strange surroundings for a home game as PC's Noth Gym had a leak in the roof. Because of this, the game was moved to Glendale Community College. Eastern Arizona scored a 76-64 victory on he neutral court. Ramon Ramirez led Phoenix with 15 points.


PC Back Home with Victory
Over Chandler-Gilbert

With the leak in North Gym's roof taken care of, the Bears returned to their true home and scored a resounding 76-49 victory over Chandler-Gilbert. Ramon Ramirez paced the Bears with 14 points, while Sascha Stafford had 12 points and Major Willette added 11 points and four assists.


PC Falls on Road at Mesa

Mesa scored an 81-65 ACCAC victory over the visiting Bears on Saturday. Igor Dutina led Phoenix College with 12 points.


PC Scores Victory Over Central Arizona

The Bears sent visiting Central Arizona home Wednesday night with a 91-84 loss in North Gym. Nate Robinson and Dave Lopez paced Phoenix with 20 points each, while Jeff Baron added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lopez also connected on all six of his field goal attempts from behind the 3-point arc.


PC Bests Pima 86-79

Phoenix College scored n 86-79 ACCAC men's basketball victory over Pima Cololege on Saturday night. Jeff Barron connected on 6-of-9 from behind the 3-point arc to lead the Bears with 22 points. Major Willette added 18 points and four assists for the Bears.


Phoenix College Scores 86-84 Upset
Over NJCAA #1 Arizona Western

The Bears scored the biggest regular season victory in Phoenix College history Tuesday night with an 86-84 victory over #1 ranked Arizona Western. The Bears handed Western its first loss in 29 outings for the 2004-2005 season.

Major Willette gave Phoenix the win on a last second shot by. Dave Lopez led the way with 25 points while Willette scored 19 and Nate Robinson tallied 17 points.

"These guys deserve this win because of their hard work, especially on sophomore night," said an excited Coach Gordon.


Bears Fall to South Mountain
in Regular Season Finale

In the final regular season game of the 2004-2005 season, South Mountain scored an 82-78 victory over Phoenix College. Major Willette paced the Bears with 20 points while Nate Robinson and Sascha Stafford added 16 and 15 points respectively.


Phoenix Advances to NJCAA Region I Division 2 Championship Game

Phoenix College scored a huge 110-79 victory over South Mountain in the opening round of the 2005 NJCAA Region I Division 2 Playoffs. The Bears, the tourney's #2 seed, will now face top seed South Mountain for the Championship. The title game will be played on Wednesday, March 9, at South Mountain at 7:30 p.m.

The Bears' 110 points is a season high for the squad as Dave Lopez led the way with 28 points. Major Willette added 20 points and four assists, while George Kirby recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
