Baseball: Yavapai, Central Arizona to Meet for Region I Division 1 Title — Top-seeded Yavapai and #3 seed Central Arizona swept through the first round to set up a showdown for the NJCAA Region I Division 1 Championship. The best 2-of-3 series begins at Yavapai at 2:00 p.m. on Thurdsay, May 8th. Softball: Yavapai Captures Region I D1 Title, Advances to National Tourney — Yavapai, playing its first season of softball in 27 years, captured the NJCAA Region I Division 1 Championship with a 7-5 victory over defending National Chjampion Eastern Arizona. The Roughriders' Jenna Rodriguez, a freshman pitcher, posted a 2-1 record and hit over .500 at the plate to earn MVP honors. Baseball: Central's Spence, Yavapai's Coach Smeltzer Take Top ACCAC Honors — Central Arizona pitcher Josh Spence has been selected the ACCAC Player of the Year for the second straight season while Yavapai Head Coach Sky Smeltzer is the 2008 ACCAC Coach of the Year. Coach Smeltzer has earned this honor three of the last four years. Softball: #1 Ranked Phoenix Dominates Season Awards — Phoenix College is the #1 NJCAA D2 program in the land and the Bears strong season was rewarded when the ACCAC and NJCAA Region I announced its 2008 awards. Lacy Goodman was tabbed the NJCAA Region I Player of the Year while PC's Coach Heinz Mueller was named the Region I Coach of the Year. Men's Basketball: Forbes, Imadiyi Selected NJCAA Division 1 Basketball All-Americans — Cochise's Dynile Forbes has been selected to the NJCAA Division 1 All-American Second Team, while Arizona Western's Sean Imadiyi has been selected to the Third Team.

Men's Basketball: NJCAA D2 All-American List Includes Cuen, Campbell, Kelly — South Mountain's David Cuen has earned First Team NJCAA All-America First Team honors, while Glendale's T.J. Campbell and South Mountain's Tyrone Kelly have been selected to the Third Team.

Women's Basketball: ACCAC Places Four on NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball All-American Squads — Tehani Goldsmith of Yavapai and Tenaya Watson of Central Arizona both earned NJCAA Division I First Team All-American honors. Arizona Western's Yohanna Morton and Central's Ashley Sours were both selected to the Third Team.

Women's Basketball: Ingraham, McDonald Named to NJCAA Division 2 Women's Basketball All-American Second Team — Pima's Jessie Ingraham and Phoenix' Jessica McDonald were both selected to the NJCAA Division 2 All-American Second Team.

Softball: Esperas & Tema Earn D1 Awards, Mailou Takes D2 Award — Eastern Arizona's Noe Esperas has earned the NJCAA Region I Division 1 Pitcher of the Week award for the second time this season, while Eastern Arizona's Jackie Tema took the Player of the Week honor. Softball: NJCAA #1s Eastern Arizona and Phoenix Led by Award Winners — The beat just keeps going for softball in the ACCAC and NJCAA Region I. Eastern Arizona (36-6) is ranked #1 in Division I while Phoenix College (43-4) sits atop the Division 2 standings. Eastern's Noe Esperas was tabbed the NJCAA Region I Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 23rd, while PC's Vanessa Walle and Lacy Goodman are the Region I Pitcher and Hitter of the Week for Division 2. | more |

Men's Basketball: Gila Monsters Place Fifth at NJCAA D1 Championships —Eastern Arizona finished the 2007-08 season with a 30-6 record and fifth place finish at the 2008 NJCAA Division 1 National Championship Tournament. EAC defeated Southeastern Illinois 70-53 and then Indian Hills CC 70-63 to complete the national tourney with a 3-1 record. Will Bynum was selected to the All-Tournament Team while Nikola Keeman earned the Sesher Sportsmanship Award.

Women's Basketball: Central Shocked in Finals — The last game of the 2007-08 season proved to be the first loss for Central Arizona (34-1) as it fell 62-61 in the NJCAA Division 1 National Championship Game to Gulf Coast Community College (36-1). Central was not challenged in the tourney until the final game, defeating Georgia Perimeter College 87-34, Midland College 72-59, and Barton County CC 78-56. Central Arizona's Ashley Sours, Tenaya Watson and Lonnie Sanchez were all selected to the All-Tournament squad.

Women's Basketball: Mesa Falls Out of NJCAA D2 Championships — Mesa's 2007-08 season came to an end with a 70-56 loss to Garrett College in the consolation bracket of the 2008 NJCAA Division 2 National Championship Tournament.

Men's Basketball: South Mountain Places 7th at NJCAA D2 Event — The Cougars completed the 2007-08 season with a 25-8 record and a seventh place finish at the 2008 NJCAA Division 2 National Championship Tournament. After falling in the opening round to eventual third-place finisher Kirkwood, South Mountain scored victories over Southeast CC (73-63) and Erie CC (86-73). The Cougars' Robert Tre Golston was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Baseball: CAC's Honeycutt Selected NJCAA Player of the Week — Central Arizona's Ryan Honeycutt has been selected the NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week for the week ending March 19th. Honeycutt, a freshman from Las Cruces, NM, helped lead Central to three victories on the week by batting .667 (10-15) and driving in 10 runs. His best performance came when he went 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBI. Of his four hits, two were doubles and he also scored two runs and was credited with a stolen base. Honeycutt also pitched one scoreless inning in CAC's 8-1 win over El Paso Community College (Texas).

Women's Basketball: Illinois Central Tops Mesa in NJCAA D2 Women's Opener — Illinois Central (25-8), the #5 National seed, defeated Mesa 70-62 in the opening round of the 2008 NJCAA Division 2 Women's National Basketball Championships. Mesa, which trailed 31-17 at halftime, responded to the pour opening 20 minutes by outscoring Illinois Central 45-39 in the second half. Mesa will now play Garrett College in the consolation bracket on Thursday morning.

Men's Basketball: EAC Falls 75-73 in NJCAA Round Two — The Gila Monsters (28-6) dropped a 75-73 decision to Three Rivers Community College (30-6) in the NJCAA Division 1 Championship Tournament auarterfinal round. Eastern Arizona, which led a majority of the contest and 38-29 at halftime, was led with 16 points by Will Bynum and Markhuri Frison-Sanders. EAC will play Southeastern Illinois College (28-7) in the consolation bracket on Thursday at 4:30 (CST).

Men's Basketball: South Mountain Defeated in NJCAA D2 Opener — Kirkwood CC (30-3) defeated South Mountain (24-8) 79-41 in the opening round of the 2008 NJCAA Division 2 National Championship Tournament. Tyrone Kelley paced South Mountain with 10 points. The Cougars will face Southeast CC (NE, 19-13) in the consolation round on Thursday.
