Softball Programs Ranked
in NJCAA Division II National Poll

Phoenix College is the top team in the first
2005 regular-season NJCAA Division Softball Poll. Cowley County
Community College (Kan.) and Kirkwood Community College (Iowa)
round out the top three.
Phoenix College (41-8) is led at the plate by
Chelsea Mesa. Mesa leads the team in five offensive categories:
batting average (.508, 65-for-128), runs scored (46), hits
(65), doubles (9) and triples (7) and she ranks third in RBI
(45). Brittny Ernst has a team-leading 11 homeruns and 48
RBI and Casey Wheeler has a team-leading nine doubles and
ranks second on the team with 10 homeruns and 47 RBI. Roxanne
Bejarano and Betheny Reynoldson lead the pitching staff. Bejarano
has a 1.132 ERA with a team-leading 103 strikeouts and Reynoldson
has 57 strikeouts with a team-leading .728 ERA. As a team
Phoenix is hitting .348 (440-for-1264) with 292 runs scored
and 279 RBI.
Cowley County (30-6) pitcher Ashly Bright pulls
double duty for the Tigers. As a hitter she leads the team
in hits (51), homeruns (6), RBI (39) and ranks second in batting
average (.495, 51-for-103). As a pitcher she has a team-leading
147 strikeouts with a .687 ERA. Also leading Cowley on the
offensive side of the ball are: Calli Simnitt (.500, 49-for-98;
11 stolen bases), Cortney Channell (.356, 36-for-101; 8 doubles),
Ashley Dunkelberger (.369, 38-for-103; 8 doubles) and Jamie
Amerine (.355, 39-for-110; 35 runs scored). On the mound Karli
Hoffman has collected 39 strikeouts and a 1.260 ERA.
The pitching duo of Shean Carpenter and Arin
Pershing lead Kirkwood (20-3) this season. Carpenter has 34
strikeouts with a team-leading .966 ERA and Pershing has a
1.458 ERA with a team-leading 40 strikeouts. At the plate
Raeann Hawley has a team-leading .509 average (27-for-53)
and 27 hits and ranks second with 19 RBI. Andrea Swanson leads
the team with 20 runs scored and 10 doubles. Nicky Van Camp
leads the team with 22 RBI, five homeruns and ranks second
with a .463 average. Ashley Westphal has stolen a team-leading
11 bases and is third on the team with a .462 average.
