South Mountain, Mesa Advance to
NJCAA National Championships

South Mountain and Mesa Community College are headed to the national championships.

South Mountain shot a four-round total of 1145 to win the NJCAA Division II Region Championship Thursday at Desert Springs Golf Course in Sun City Grande. Mesa was second with a 1168. The top two teams qualify for the NJCAA Division II National Championships May 24-27 in Scottsboro, Ala.

South Mountain's Matt Rutledge won the tournament with a 16-under 272. Rutledge had three rounds at 5-under or better before shooting par in the final round Thursday.

Mesa's Ryan Caughlan was 10 strokes back to finish second. Paradise Valley's Josh Brox shot 73-74-67-75 -- 289 to finish tied for fifth. His 5-under 67 in the third round was his lowest competitive round ever. His previous best was a 74.

"I've got something to work with," said Brox, a freshman who returns to PVCC next year, told his coach Nick Candrea.
