Selected NJCAA Division 1 Basketball All-Americans
Cochise's Dynile Forbes
has been selected to the NJCAA Division 1 All-American
Second Team, while Arizona Western's Sean Imadiyi has
been selected to the Third Team.
NJCAA D2 All-American
List Includes Cuen, Campbell, Kelly South
Mountain's David Cuen has earned First Team NJCAA All-America
First Team honors, while Glendale's T.J. Campbell and
South Mountain's Tyrone Kelly have been selected to
the Third Team.
Gila Monsters
Place Fifth at NJCAA D1 Championships Eastern
Arizona finished the 2007-08 season with a 30-6 record
and fifth place finish at the 2008 NJCAA Division 1
National Championship Tournament. EAC defeated Southeastern
Illinois 70-53 and then Indian Hills CC 70-63 to complete
the national tourney with a 3-1 record. Will Bynum was
selected to the All-Tournament Team while Nikola Keeman
earned the Sesher Sportsmanship Award.
South Mountain
Places 7th at NJCAA D2 Event
The Cougars completed the 2007-08 season with a 25-8
record and a seventh place finish at the 2008 NJCAA
Division 2 National Championship Tournament. After falling
in the opening round to eventual third-place finisher
Kirkwood, South Mountain scored victories over Southeast
CC (73-63) and Erie CC (86-73). The Cougars' Robert
Tre Golston was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
EAC Falls 75-73
in NJCAA Round Two
The Gila Monsters (28-6) dropped a 75-73 decision to
Three Rivers Community College (30-6) in the NJCAA Division
1 Championship Tournament auarterfinal round. Eastern
Arizona, which led a majority of the contest and 38-29
at halftime, was led with 16 points by Will Bynum and
Markhuri Frison-Sanders. EAC will play Southeastern
Illinois College (28-7) in the consolation bracket on
Thursday at 4:30 (CST).
South Mountain
Defeated in NJCAA D2 Opener
Kirkwood CC (30-3) defeated South Mountain (24-8) 79-41
in the opening round of the 2008 NJCAA Division 2 National
Championship Tournament. Tyrone Kelley paced South Mountain
with 10 points. The Cougars will face Southeast CC (NE,
19-13) in the consolation round on Thursday.
Eastern Arizona
Victorious in NJCAA DI Opening Round
Eastern Arizona scored a 69-53 victory in the opening
round of the 2008 NJCAA Division 1 Ntional Championship
Tournament over Walters State (31-2), Eastern Arizona
(28-5) will play Three Rivers Community College (29-6)
on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. (CST).
#2 Seed Eastern
Arizona Wins Region 1 Division 1 Title
Eastern Arizona upset #1 seed and 13th ranked Arizona
Western 69-58 to advance to the NJCAA Division 1 National
Championhsip Tournament as the 2008 Region I Division
1 Champs. Eastern, which advances to the National Tournament
for the first time since 1995, never led and built its
largest lead at 49-27 after opening the second half
with a 16-7 run. Arizona Western then used a 23-6 run
to close the gap to 55-50 but the Gila Monsters responded
with seven unanswered points to preserve the victory.
Nikola Kecman, the tourney's MVP, paced Eastern arizona
with 21 points, while Tommie Sanders led Arizona Western
with 18 points. | More

South Mountain
Captures Region I D2 Crown
Top-seed and 8th ranked South Mountain defeated Phoenix
81-75 in overtime to capture the 2008 Region I Division
2 Championship. Phoenix overcame a 17-point defecit
to tie the game in regulation before falling in the
extra frame. Tyrone Kelley, the tourney's MVP, paced
the Cougars with 34 points. Justin Salzwedel connected
on 6-of-8 3-point field goals in the second half, including
the game-tying trey with 25 seconds remaining in regulation,
and led Phoenix with 20 points. | More

#3 seed Eastern Arizona topped #3 Mesa 70-68 to advance
to the championship game of the 2008 Region I Division

Mehdi Cheriet
Tabbed NJCAA Top Weekly Performer
Arizona Western's Mehdi Cheriet is the NJCAA Division
I Player of the Week for the week ending February 3,
2008. Cheriet scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds
in an 87-74 win over Yavapai. He then tallied 17 points
aand grabbed six board in a 101-63 victory over Phoenix.

CG's Uqdah Selected ACCAC POWs
Mehdi Cheriet averaged 18.5 points to help Arizona Western
to a pair of wins on the week and earn the ACCAC's Division
1 Player of the Week honor. Chandler-Gilbert's Talib
Uqdah was selected the ACCAC's Division 2 Player of
the Week after 23.5 points in a pair of Coyote wins.

After a 31-8 season, Eastern Arizona sits atop the ACCAC's
2007-08 Preseason Coaches Poll after receiving eight
of the 12 first place votes. Eastern Arizona is picked
second and received three first place votes after its
23-7 season, while Cochise (20-12) is picked third.
