Information Literacy Assessment Committee
Notes from July 21, 2004 Meeting
8:30am in L230
Present: Ann Roselle (Chair), Michelle Dyer-Hurdon, Elizabeth
Saliba, Damita Kaloostian (IR guest), and Emily Lander (IR guest)
PROJECT SAILS
Ann distributed materials about PROJECT SAILS, a standardized test
of information literacy skills, that she received at the American
Library Association Conference in May 2004. A timeline was included.
Preliminary discussion took place on when to test, which students
to test, and how to administer the test.
The group decided that:
- Testing will occur in fall and spring semesters.
- Testing in fall would be done with ENG101 students. These students
[GROUP 1] would represent students that have received little/no
information literacy instruction at PC.
- Testing in spring would be done with students who have received
significant information literacy instruction at PC [GROUP 2].
- Test environment preferably will be online within a class period.
Print tests will also be made available. In addition, the option
for ENG101 instructors to have their students take the test outside
of class will also be made available.
- WEBCT102 students should not be included in GROUP 2 because
the extent to which their receive information literacy instruction
is unclear.
ACTION ITEMS
Ann will speak with Nancy Matte about the possibility of ENG101 participation.
Ann will contact PROJECT SAILS to clarify the use of student IDs in
the process.
Ann will speak with Darren Everingham about the technical components
of the project.
Info. Lit. Ass. Com. will determine a mechanism to identify GROUP
2 students, possibly using the Curriculum Map the committee began
developing in Spring 04.
