The series came about in response to the chaos and upheaval in the country and the world in recent years. As the country experienced great turmoil and eventually went into war and nothing but images of anger, pride and greed filled the media. Martinez became overwhelmed with all of it. Wondering if there was any good, any peace, any reason left in the world she was led to research and study the Deadly Sins and the Cardinal Virtues. The conclusion is that there is a balance that exists in the world, therein lies hope and resolution. The work was completed between 2003-04.
Each image is a stage set of sorts. And the stage set is lined with characters. The curtain has been drawn. We are being introduced. Who am I? Who are you?
