Introduction

"To maintain homeostasis and survive, an individual organism must digest food, exchange gases, maintain salt and water balance, and coordinate body systems. To prepetuate the species, organisms must reproduce. Reproduction serves as the link to generations past, present, and future. Because meiosis and fertilization occur during sexual reproduction, this form of reproduction usually has the advantage of producing offspring that are not exactly like either parent. The introduction of genetic variation among offspring may help to ensure survival of the species if environmental conditions are changing."

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. The human male reproductive system continuously produces a large number of sperm that are transported within a fluid medium.
  2. Hormones control the production of sperm and maintain primary and secondary sex charateristics of males.
  3. The human female reproductive system produces one egg monthly and prepares the uterus to house the developing fetus.
  4. Hormones control the monthly reproductive cycle in females and play a significant role in maintaining pregnancy.
