Lesson 10 - Hormones and the Endocrine System

Introduction

Getting Started

"The endocrine system is slower acting than the nervous system and often regulates processes that occur over days or even months. Hormones secreted into the blood stream control whole-body processes, such as growth and reproduction, and complex behaviors, including courtship and migration. Hormones influence the metabolism after they arrive at cells with appropriate receptor proteins. It can take awhile to metabolically change a cell, but the effect is longer lasting."

Focus on Learning

Use the course competencies listed below to focus your learning and use the lesson objectives to sharpen that focus.

Competencies By the end of the lesson , you should be able to:

  1. Apply general concepts to selected topics in human biology.

Objectives

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. Hormones typically influence the metabolism of target cells.
  2. The hypothalamus controls the pituitary gland which in turn controls other glands.
  3. Endocrine glands including the thyroid, adrenals, pancreas, and gonads control a variety of body functions.
  4. Hormonal control contributes to homeostasis.
