Lesson 8 - Microorganisms

Introduction

Getting Started

"Viruses are noncellular entities responsible for a number of diseases in plants, animals, and humans. Polio, smallpox, rabies, and AIDS are all caused by viruses. Even so, viruses are useful tools in the biotechnology laboratory and are even used as vectors for gene therapy in humans. Most people are familiar with bacteria because some cause deadly diseases; but others produce antibiotics that are used to cure such illnesses. Due to the ease with which they can be grown and manipulated in the laboratory, bacteria are used to study basic life principles such as protein synthesis."

Focus on Learning

Use the course competencies listed below to focus your learning and use the lesson objectives to sharpen that focus.

Competencies By the end of the lesson , you should be able to:

  1. Describe prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure and function.
  2. Describe the structure, growth, and human impact of bacteria and viruses.

Objectives

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. Viruses are composed of nucleic acid and protein and some have an outer membrane.
  2. Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites.
  3. Prokaryotes include bacteria and archaea that reproduce by binnary fission.
  4. Prokaryotes have a variety of metabolic capabilities.
  5. Gram staining, shape of cell, type of nutrition, and other biochemical characteristics, including DNA data, are used to differentiate groups of bacteria.

Reading Assignments
