Our modern knowledge of genetics has been aquired from studying the variety of other model organisms such as bacteria, bread mold, nematodes, and fruit flies.Extensive studies have also broadened our knowledge of human genetics."

  1. Describe principles of Mendelian genetics as they apply to inheritance in humans.
 
Objectives

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. Gene pairs segregate during the formation of gametes.
  2. Homologous pairs of chromosomes separate independently during meiosis.
  3. Human genetic disorders are inherited.
  4. Sex chromosomes determine the sex of individuals.
  5. Certain traits, unrelated to sex, are controlled by genes on the sex chromosomes.
  6. Alleles on the same chromosome do not segregate and asort independently.
  7. Crossing-over can recombine linked genes.
  8. Significant human syndromes are due to changes in chromosome number or structure.
