Lesson 5 - Cell Reproduction

Introduction

Getting Started

"Cell division enables a single cell to produce many cells, allowing an organism to grow and develop. Cell division also occurs when repair is needed and worn-out tissues need to be replaced. During the production of egg and sperm, the chromosome number is reduced, and the gametes have one-half the number of chromosomes."

Focus on Learning

Use the course competencies listed below to focus your learning and use the lesson objectives to sharpen that focus.

Competencies By the end of the lesson , you should be able to:

  1. Describe cell reproduction in eukaryotes.

Objectives

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. The cell cycle is a repeating sequence that is tightly controlled and leads to an increase in cell number.
  2. Cell division consists of mitosis and cytokinesis.
  3. Cancer occurs when mutations lead to uncontrolled cell division.
  4. Binary fission is a type of cell division and a form of asexual reproduction in prokaryotes.
  5. Meiosis produces cells that become gametes in animals and spores in other organisms.
  6. Meiosis halves the number of chromosomes and increases genetic diversity.
  7. The human life-cycle includes mitosis and meiosis.

Reading Assignments

Reading Assignment Reading is a very important component of an internet course. Read the assigned pages from your textbook before proceeding to the Activities, Study Help, and Assessment Sections.
