Lesson 4 - Cell Respiration

Introduction

Getting Started

"ATP molecules are produced during cellular respiration, a process that includes reactions in both cytoplasm and the mitochondria. Cellular respiration consists of many small steps mediated by specific enzymes. High-energy electrons are removed from glucose breakdown products and passed down an electron transport chain located on the cristae of mitochondria. As the electrons move from one carrier to the next, energy is released and captured for the production of ATP molecules."

Focus on Learning

Use the course competencies listed below to focus your learning and use the lesson objectives to sharpen that focus.

Competencies By the end of the lesson , you should be able to:

  1. Describe principles of cell metabolism and energy utilization.

Objectives

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. The breakdown of glucose drives the synthesis of ATP.
  2. Coenzymes NAD+ and FAD carry electrons to the electron transport chain in the mitochondria.
  3. Glycolysis, thre prepratory reaction, the citric acid cycle, and the electron transport chain are all required in cellular respiration.
  4. Reactions outside and inside the mitochondria are linked.
  5. A number of metabolites in addition to glucose can be broken down to produce ATP.
  6. Fermentation is a pathway that partially breaksdown glucose under anaerobic conditions.
