Lesson 2 - Cell Structure and Function

Introduction

Getting Started

"Cells, the fundamental building blocks of organisms, are so tiny they weren't discovered until the development of the microscope. Today, we know that all tissues from the cork of a tree to the nervous tissue of humans are composed of cells. Electron microscopy and biochemical analysis of the last century led to the discovery that plant and animal cells contain a variety of organelles, each specializedto perform a particular function."

Focus on Learning

Use the course competencies listed below to focus your learning and use the lesson objectives to sharpen that focus.

Competencies By the end of the lesson , you should be able to:

  1. Describe prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure and function.

Objectives

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. All organisms are composed of cells which arise from preexisting cells.
  2. Cell-surface to volume relationships effect cell function.
  3. Prokaryotic cells lack membrane bound organelles.
  4. Eukaryotic cells have a membrane bound nucleus that contains chromatin that condenses into chromosomes.
  5. Eukaryotic cells have mitochondria and an enmdomembrane system.
  6. The plasma membrane contains lipids and proteins which function to regulate the passage of molecules and ions.
  7. Some molecules, including water, diffuse across the plasma membrane from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.
  8. Carrier proteins assist the transport of some molecules and ions across the plasma membrane.

Reading Assignments

Reading Assignment Reading is a very important component of an internet course. Read the assigned pages from your textbook before proceeding to the Activities, Study Help, and Assessment Sections.
