Lesson 11 - Realm of Blue Water

Introduction

In this lesson you will study the life in the surface waters of the deep blue sea.

Getting Started Now we will examine the general ecology of the surface of the open sea (epipelagic zone). Our studies will include an examination of the basic characteristics of epipelagic environments. We will also examine the organisms that live there and the adaptations they have for life in the boundless relm of blue water. We will also study plankton and its role in pelagic food webs.

Focus on Learning

Use the course competencies listed below to focus your learning and use the lesson objectives to sharpen that focus.

Competencies By the end of the lesson , you should be able to:

  1. Describe the pelagic environment.
  2. Identify the roles played by phytoplankton in pelagic systems.
  3. Identify the roles played by zooplankton in pelagic systems.

Objectives

To master the competencies, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the physical characteristics of the waters of the open sea.
  2. Describe, in general, the seasonal and spatial variations in phytoplankton productivity.
  3. Describe zooplanktonic animals and their position in pelagic food webs.
  4. Compare and contrast the fishes of the epipelagic.

Reading Assignments

Reading Assignment Reading is a very important component of an internet course. Read the assigned pages from your textbook and coloring book before proceeding to the Instruction section.
