Lesson 10 - Subtidal Communities

Introduction

In this lesson you will be studying kelp forests and coral reefs.

Getting Started Now we will examine the general ecology of selected subtidal environments. We will consider a variety of organisms that are associated with the sea bottom beyond the shoreline. We will study the organisms and ecology of kelp forests and coral reefs which are located in shallow water nearshore. These are habitats that can be explored by SCUBA divers and have been frequently visited because of the diversity and abundance of life they contain. Aside from direct visits, many people have experienced them vicariously through television programs. Our studies will include an examination of the basic biotic and abiotic characteristics of these environments.
