Lesson 9 - Animal Organization and Homeostasis

Introduction

"The biological levels of organization acts as a backdrop to this lesson, which will consider the structure and function of various tissues, organs, and organ systems. Two themes are introduced that will be referred to time and time again: 1) structure suits function, and 2) homeostasis."

Getting Started "Structure suits function means that the function of an organ is reflected in its structure. For example, the function of the heart is to pump blood, and therefore it contains chambers for holding blood and has thick, muscular walls for pumping blood. Homeostasis refers to the relative constancy of the internal environment. In complex animals, the internal environment is blood and tissue fluid."

Focus on Learning

Use the course competencies listed below to focus your learning and use the lesson objectives to sharpen that focus.

Competencies By the end of the lesson , you should be able to:

  1. Describe and analyze the processes involved in evolution and their impact on all living things.

Objectives

To master the competencies, you should seek to understand how:

  1. The structure of tissues suits their function.
  2. Four types of tissues are common in the animal body.
  3. Organs, composed of tissues, work together in organ systems.
  4. All organ systems contribute to homeostasis in animals.
