Lesson 7 - Evolution of Microbial Life
| "Viruses are non-cellular, and they reproduce only inside living cells. The life-cycle of a bacteriophage describes, in general, the life cycle of a virus in any type of cell, including ananimal cell. Of special concern are viruses that cause diseases in plants and animals including humans. Prokaryotes are cellular but lack a true nucleus and other membrane organelles. They all reproduce by binary fission but have varied means of nutrition, including photosynthesis. The cyanobacteria release oxygen into the atmosphere, and the archaea are well know for living in extreme environments. Prokaryotes are extremely plentiful and play n important role in the environment, in addition to causing human diseases." | |
| Getting Started | "The first organic molecules could have originated in the atmosphere, or perhaps at hydrothermal vents. The discovery of RNA enzymes (ribozymes) suggests that RNA could have formed the first genes. A protocell (before the first true cell) surrounded by a plasma membranecould store genetic information and metabolize." |
