Lesson 5 - Biotechnology and Genomics

Introduction
 
"Gene cloning can be done in one of two ways: through recombinant DNA technology or through the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Recombinant DNA technology utilizing plasmids allows bacteria to be genetically modified. Plants, animals, and humans are modified by other means. So far, gene therapy trials have not met with marked success."
 
Getting Started "Basic research into the nature and organization of genes in various organisms allowed genetics to produce recombinant DNA molecules. A knowledge of transcription and translation also enabled scientists to manipulate gene expression of foreign genes in organisms. These breakthroughs have spurred a biotechnology revolution."
