Shuts Out Cougars 1-0
TYLER, Texas -- Although the Illinois
Central College men's soccer team held No. 2 Yavapai College
to one goal on Thursday, the Cougars couldn't find the net
Yavapai (22-2) defeated ICC, 1-0, in a first-round match in
the NJCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.
ICC (18-5) plays today at 2 p.m. against Mercer County, the
sixth seed out of Trenton, N.J. The Cougars must win today
to play again on Sunday.
The loss to the Roughriders snapped a school-record 18-match
win streak for ICC.
"Defensively, we played well and we put a lot a lot
of pressure on them and had some good chances ourselves but
weren't able to capitalize on them and finish," ICC coach
Oz Bakirdan said.
"Our biggest problem was that we gave away too many
balls in the middle and we haven't done that all year. The
speed of play was a lot quicker and any mistake became major."
Yavapai scored its only goal 53 minutes into the game on
a header by Francis Khamis, who is the Arizona school's leading
scorer with 21 goals this season.
"Their goal was a beautiful goal," Bakirdan said.
"He buried it."
Both teams had five shots on goal. ICC had 15 fouls called
against it compared to seven against Yavapai.
"Our last 20 minutes was the best we've played all year,"
Bakirdan said. "I can't fault my players. They left it
on the field."
In other matches, top-ranked Georgia Perimeter beat CCBC-Essex,
3-0, and San Jacinto (5) defeated Jefferson, 1-0.
