Bears to Compete in Valley of the Sun Bowl on December 6th

Oh, what a difference a year makes.

This time last year the Phoenix College football team was coming off a losing season (4-6 record) despite strong efforts from a tough defensive line up. After its disappointing season, the Bears’ problems were compounded when head coach Dale Wolfley left his position.

However, this is a new year with a new skipper at the helm.

The rebirth of Phoenix College football came in the form of veteran coach Land Jacobsen. After being hired last summer, he quickly went to work to reverse the fortunes of the struggling program.

“I’m very disciplined and organized,” said Jacobsen. “The players won’t admit it, but I think they desperately wanted that.”

Jacobsen, who has been coaching for over 32 years, also brought a “tough-love” approach to the Bears. He said he purposely had his players practice at the hottest time of the day to help build character.

This new approach, coupled with an already talented roster, has translated into one of the most remarkable turnarounds in school history.

The Bears finished the 2008 regular season with a 7-3 record and ranked 8th nationally in the NJCAA poll. They also won the conference (ACCAC) championship last month.

By virtue of winning their conference title, the team qualified for the Valley of the Sun Bowl game this Saturday. The game will mark the Bears’ first bowl appearance since 1986.

This historic feat has reverberated throughout the college.

“The excitement of this opportunity has swept up the entire campus,” said Athletic Director Scott Geddis. “We are looking forward to December 6th as the start of a new winning tradition for Phoenix College football.”

The Bears, however, will have their hands full on Saturday against a formidable opponent.

The Harper Hawks (Palatine, IL) come into the game with an impressive 10-1 record and are currently ranked 4th nationally in the NJCAA poll.

Coach Jacobsen said they would present a great challenge. He said they are big, strong, talented and well coached.

However, the Bears have a distinct advantage of playing on their home turf in front of their fans. “That should really play in our favor,” added Jacobsen.

Regardless of the outcome, the first-year head coach believes this season’s success will leave a lasting effect on the program. As a result of the winning season, he expects to land some of the nation’s top high school players.

“We will have an outstanding recruiting class next season,” he said. “And hopefully, we will be re-loaded for another run at a bowl game.”
