
Phlebotomy Program Frequently Asked Questions
What are the program prerequisites?
Applicants can complete the entire program and prerequisite courses in the same semester. HCC130 and HCC145AA are prerequisite or co-requisite courses for those students who have less than 2 years of healthcare experience. HCC130 and HCC145AA may be waived for students with 2 years of health care experience with Program Director approval.
How do I enroll in the program?
Please discuss your interest in the program with an Advisor in the Learning Center building at 602-285-7110 or contact the Program Director via email at rochelle.helminski@pcmail.maricopa.edu. You must submit an application to a Phoenix College Adviser to be considered for acceptance into the program.
What are the requirements for application into the program?
The following items must be submitted to be considered for the program:
-Completed Phlebotomy Program Application
-Submit a copy of your High School Diploma, or GED, or Unofficial College Transcripts/Placement Testing for English, reading and math
-Submit a completed and signed Health and Safety Documentation Form with supporting documentation of:
Proof of MMR vaccinations or positive titers
Proof of positive Varicella titer or Varicella vaccine
Proof of negative 2-stepTB skin test or chest x-ray within the last year
Proof of Hepatitis B vaccinations or positive titers
Proof of Tetanus (Td) vaccination within the last 10 years
Health Declaration signed by M.D., D.O., N.P., P.A.
-Submit a current copy of CPR card for the Health Care Provider
-Copy of current Fingerprint Clearance Card, or a Receipt showing the Fingerprint Clearance Card process has begun (card must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the program if conditionally accepted into the program)
-Submit the Clinical Planning Form
When does the program begin? What is the schedule for the program?
Students interested in the Spring 2010 program will have three options.
Evening January Program
Classes run from January 26, 2010 – March 11, 2010, on Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 5:00pm - 9:00pm. Clinicals will be scheduled either: Monday through Friday from 7am to 3pm from March 22nd through April 2nd - or - Monday through Friday 7am to 11am from March 22nd through April 16th
Day February Program
Classes run from February 24, 2010 – April 9, 2010, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 1:00pm - 5:00pm with a 2-week break for Spring Break. Clinicals will be scheduled either: Monday through Friday from 7am to 3pm from April 19th through April 30th - or - Monday through Friday 7am to 11am from April 19th through May 14th
Evening April Program
Classes run from April 13, 2010 – May 27, 2010, on Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 5:00pm - 9:00pm. Clinicals will be scheduled either: Monday through Friday from 7am to 3pm from June 7 through June 18th - or - Monday through Friday 7am to 11am from June 7th through July 2nd
Applications for the Spring evening or day programs are now available, and must be submitted by 4pm on November 20, 2009 to a Phoenix College Adviser.
The program meets in the C building at Phoenix College, 12th Avenue and Thomas Road
Do I have to schedule my own clinical site to conduct clinical rotations?
You do not schedule your own clinical site. The program director and the clinical coordinator schedule your clinical rotations When applying for the program, you must choose which program option you wish to enroll in, and you must choose which clinical schedule you will participate in. Clinical hours must be completed during the dates/times listed above, evening/weekend hours are not available.
How much does the program cost?
HCC130 – Fundamentals in Health Care Delivery – 3 credits - $213
HCC145AA – Medical Terminology – 1 credit - $71
HCE109 – Phlebotomy: Basic Skills – 1 credit - $101
HCE111 – Specimen Processing and Advanced Techniques – 1 credit - $111
HCE122 – Clinical Practicum: Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing – 1.5 credits - $127

Fingerprint Clearance Card - $68
CPR for Health Care Providers - $20-$50 – varies according to location
Immunizations - $250 - $600 – varies according to location and previous immunization history
Drug Testing (prior to clinical practicum) - $35
Scrubs for class and clinicals - $15-30 – varies according to place of purchase
What textbooks are required for the program?
Phlebotomy Essentials, McCall et all, 4th edition
Cost – approximately $53.00
Note: additional textbooks are required for HCC130 and HCC145AA
If I apply for the program, when will I know if I have been accepted?
Application and materials will be reviewed and students notified by letter of their conditional acceptance or non-acceptance no later than the third week in December for the Spring 2010 Programs.
